Appearance-related concerns resulting from disfigurement or pressure to conform to beauty ideals, indiscriminately affect patients’ mental and physical health. Healthcare professionals face the challenge of addressing patients’ support needs. Therefore a European University Consortium developed a course to address learning needs. Prior to its design, a study with multi-disciplinary European healthcare professionals was conducted to maximize its relevance and acceptability. Healthcare professionals (n = 718; 48% nurses, 30% doctors, 22% allied health professionals) were surveyed regarding the nature and impact of patients’ appearance concerns, confidence in key areas associated with detecting/addressing concerns, and training/educational needs. Participants reported that this subject is highly relevant and 70% described the psychosocial impact of appearance concerns across the lifespan resulting from disfiguring conditions, disability, neurological disease, ageing and weight/shape dissatisfaction. Participants, irrespective of their experience, self-reported inadequate knowledge regarding appearance-specific care, 87% requested further information and 70% wanted access to an accredited course; barriers deterring participation in training were identified. Healthcare professionals across multiple specialties are caring for patients with a wide-range of appearance concerns that impact on physical and mental health and want to increase their appearance-specific knowledge and expertise. Results have informed training/courses which have the potential to improve patient care and ameliorate health-related outcomes.

Objective

The purpose of this research was to examine the relationships among active listening, self-awareness, empathy, and patient-centered care in nursing students.

Background

Empathy and patient-centered care have been associated with better patient outcomes. Active listening and self-awareness are suggested to be associated with empathy, and, in turn, patient-centered care. However, the relationships among active listening, self-awareness, empathy, and patient-centered care have not been investigated.

Method

Data on active listening, self-awareness, empathy, and patient-centered care were collected from 53 nursing students, and were analyzed using multiple regression.

Results

Active listening (p < .001) and self-awareness (p < .001) were significantly associated with empathy. Empathy was significantly associated with patient-centered care (p = .003). Empathy was a partial mediator of the relationship between active listening and PCC and a full mediator of the relationship between self-awareness and patient-centered care.

Conclusion

Improvement in active listening and self-awareness may lead to improvement in empathy, and, in turn, improvement in patient-centered care.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relations among the use of the body mechanics principle, clinical-practice fatigue, and practice satisfaction of nursing students.

Methods

Participants were 149 nursing students with clinical-practice experience from four nursing colleges in South Korea. Data were collected from May to July of 2016 using structured questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 22.0.

Results

The participants' scores for the use of body mechanics principle, clinical-practice fatigue, and practice satisfaction were 3.12 (out of 5), 4.61 (out of 7), and 3.58 (out of 5), respectively. The use of the body mechanics principle and clinical-practice fatigue showed a negative correlation (r =−0.379, p<0.001) while the use of the body mechanics principle and practice satisfaction showed a positive correlation (r =0.341, p<0.001). Clinical-practice fatigue and practice satisfaction showed a positive correlation (r =−0.384, p<0.001). The group of students who scored high on the use of the body mechanics principle showed significantly lower scores on clinical-practice fatigue than those who scored low on the use of the body mechanics principle (t=3.879, p<0.001) while the scores on the satisfaction of clinical practice were significantly high (t=−3.338, p<0.001).

Conclusions

This study found that nursing students' use of the body mechanics principle could reduce clinical-practice fatigue and increase practice satisfaction. It is necessary to develop and teach various body mechanics programs for nursing students.

The American population is aging with one in every seven Americans over the age of 65. Throughout the healthcare continuum, this segment of the population is faced with the burden of malnutrition brought on by many factors including aging, inadequate food intake, and acute and chronic medical conditions. The loss of lean body mass, strength, and functionality compound malnutrition leading to weakness, hospitalizations, and overall decreased ability to perform activities of daily living. Up to 60% of hospitalized older adults are malnourished but many patients go unrecognized and undertreated. Nurses are in a pivotal position to change this trajectory. Nurses are often the first to identify patients in need of nutrition intervention and are integral to encouraging nutritional intake from admission through discharge. Effective nutrition screening can be conducted by nurses in minimal time as part of the admission process through the use of a screening tool that is simple, fast, reliable, and valid. As part of the collaborative health care team, nurses can effectively communicate nutrition screening results through the use of the electronic health record and when prescribed, ensure that nutrition interventions occur within the targeted timeframe. Nurses can develop procedures to provide patients with meal assistance, reliable access to food and snacks across all shifts, and help bridge nutritional gaps through oral nutritional supplements all in an effort to address malnutrition.

How to plan and perform a qualitative study using content analysis

This paper describes the research process – from planning to presentation, with the emphasis on credibility throughout the whole process – when the methodology of qualitative content analysis is chosen in a qualitative study. The groundwork for the credibility initiates when the planning of the study begins. External and internal resources have to be identified, and the researcher must consider his or her experience of the phenomenon to be studied in order to minimize any bias of his/her own influence. The purpose of content analysis is to organize and elicit meaning from the data collected and to draw realistic conclusions from it. The researcher must choose whether the analysis should be of a broad surface structure (a manifest analysis) or of a deep structure (a latent analysis). Four distinct main stages are described in this paper: the decontextualisation, the recontextualisation, the categorization, and the compilation. This description of qualitative content analysis offers one approach that shows how the general principles of the method can be used.

Background

Emergency department nurses are continuously exposed to violence on the job.

Objectives

This study sought to identify the prevalence and pattern of workplace violence and the consequences of violence on nurses working in emergency departments in Riyadh.

Design

Cross-sectional survey conducted from April to May 2015.

Setting

Emergency departments of three hospitals in Riyadh.

Participants

Nurses participated voluntarily and anonymously.

Methods

Nurses were recruited by advertisement. A self-administered questionnaire with 23 items was given to participants by a head nurse. Violent acts were classified as physical or nonphysical. Descriptive statistics are presented and statistical comparisons were made to evaluate differences by gender, nationality, age, experience and other demographic variables.

Results

Of 150 questionnaires distributed, 121 were returned (80.6%). One hundred were females (82.6%) and 71 (58.7%) had worked in nursing for less than or equal to 5 years. Most participants (n=108, 89.3%) had experienced a violent incident in the past 12 months. Eighty (80/108, 74.1%) of those who had experienced violence had experienced verbal abuse and 20 (20/108, 18.5%) had faced verbal and physical violence during the past year. The type of violence was associated with gender and educational level. Patients (89/108, 82.4%) and their relatives (70/108, 64.8%) were the most common instigators of violence. Most nurses (78/108, 72.3%) expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which incidents were handled.

Conclusion

Workplace violence was pervasive in the emergency departments of these three hospitals in Riyadh. The data are consistent with other reports of workplace violence in emergency departments in Saudi Arabia and in other countries.

Recommendations

Suitable strategies to deal with the issue include establishing workplace violence management teams and creating appropriate rules and regulations that can improve workplace safety for nurses, while improving patient care quality. Security systems and formulation of violence prevention policies and procedures are mandatory measures in emergency departments. In addition, training programs are needed to help support, teach and provide nurses with the knowledge and skills needed to manage violent situations in the workplace.

Aims

(1) To describe nurses׳ job satisfaction and intention to leave their current employer; and (2) to explore the associations between nine aspects of job satisfaction (i.e., motivators and hygiene factors) and nurses’ intentions to leave their current employer.

Background

Increasing nurse shortages and accelerating personnel turnover are global healthcare issues. Improving nurses׳ job satisfaction and reducing their intentions to leave are crucial to nurse workforce stability.

Methods

Secondary analysis of nurse survey data from the Swiss arm of the Nurse Forecasting in Europe (2009/2010) study. Associations between aspects of nurses׳ job satisfaction and intentions to leave were analyzed via multiple logistic regression analyses.

Results

Overall, nurses reported being very satisfied with their jobs and with ‘independence at work’, but less satisfied with the possibility for ‘study leave’. A total of 27.4% intended to leave their current jobs, with lower ratings of ‘opportunities for advancement’ as the most relevant factor explaining these intentions.

Conclusion

In view of predicted nurse shortages, Swiss acute care hospitals’ might improve their success regarding nurse job satisfaction and retention by offering nursing career models with more opportunities for clinical advancement.
