ITU has standardized a computational model as Recommendation G.1070 for Quality of Experience (QoE) planning [1]. In our previous work, we proposed a system for calculating the G.1070 visual quality estimate in a monitoring scenario [2]. In G.1070, the visual quality is based, in part, on frame rate, bitrate, and packet-loss rate. For a fixed frame rate and a fixed packet-loss rate, the G.1070 visual quality score will decrease with decreases in bitrate. However, G.1070 cannot distinguish between cases in which a decrease in bitrate truly does represent a decrease in quality and cases in which the underlying content is easy to encode, thus resulting in a lower bitrate without a corresponding decrease in quality. In this paper, we propose a modification to G.1070 model to account for this difference by including an analysis of the underlying complexity of the video content. More specifically, we propose a quality measure in which the bitrate input to G.1070 is replaced with a normalized bitrate, where the normalization is based on an estimate of the complexity of the compressed content. With this proposed enhancement to the model (named as G.1070E), it allows a much better approximation to MOS values and the NTIA-VQM[3].

Spatial-temporal Video Quality Metric based on an estimation of QoE 基于QoE估计的时空视频质量度量

In this work a new Reduced Reference (RR) Video Quality Metric (VQM) is proposed. The method takes advantage of the Human Visual System (HVS) sensitivity to sharp changes in the video. The proposed method has a spatial-temporal approach and because of that it is named as STAQ (Spatial-Temporal Assessment of Quality). In the first step of STAQ we take a temporal approach and find the matching regions in consecutive frames. In the next step, a spatial approach is taken in the way of calculating the quality of the matching regions in the temporal approach. In the last step, the quality of the video is calculated based on the parameters gathered in the spatial and temporal domain and using the motion activity density of the video as a controlling factor. An important improvement lies in taking into account the Quality of Experience (QoE) represented as the motion activity density of the reference video. The results show a great improvement in the case of H.264 and MPEG-2 compressed and IP distorted videos even when compared to state of the art Full Reference (FR) metrics.

There are many factors and parameters that have an effect on the perceptual quality of 2D and 3D media. This paper investigates how the contrast affects 3D and 2D perceptions. We implemented the double stimulus continuous quality scale method to conduct subjective tests that evaluate the perceptual quality of experience of 3D video and its 2D counterpart at different contrast levels between the object of interest and the background. Our test set-up guarantees that the results are independent of the brightness reduction caused by a specific 3D viewing/displaying technology. Statistical analysis shows that the effect of contrast on the perceptual quality of 2D and 3D videos is similar.

We propose an algorithm to detect salient regions for JPEG distorted images for two tasks: quality assessment and free viewing. The algorithm extracts low-level features such as contrast, luminance, quality and so on and uses a machine-learning framework to predict salient regions in JPEG distorted images. We demonstrate that the automatically predicted regions-of-interest highly correlate with those from (human) ground truth saliency maps. Further, we evaluate the relevance of extracted low-level features for saliency prediction and analyze how incorporation of quality as a feature improves prediction performance as a function of the distortion severity. Applications of such a saliency prediction framework include developing novel pooling strategies for image quality assessment.

In this paper, a novel method for predicting the visibility of packet losses in SD and HD H.264/AVC video sequences and modeling their impact on perceived quality is proposed. Based on the findings of a new subjective experiment it is initially shown that the classification of packet loss visibility in a binary fashion is not sufficient to model the perceptual degradations caused by the transmission errors. The proposed no-reference algorithm extracts a set of features from the video bit-stream to account for the spatial and temporal characteristics of the video content and the induced distortion due to the network impairments. Subsequently, the visibility of packet losses is predicted in a continuous fashion using Support Vector Regression. Finally, a no-reference bit-stream based video quality assessment model that explicitly employs the predicted packet loss visibility estimates is presented. The evaluation of the proposed model demonstrates that the use of continuous estimates for the visibility of packet losses improves the performance of the video quality assessment model.

Seamless use of video telephony in future mobile communication systems creates new challenges for high-quality provisioning. Terminal mobility and dynamically changing network properties will affect the quality of the Internet connection and consequently will impair the Quality of Experience (QoE) of mobile users. To ensure best connected video calls, cross-layer adaptation of the audiovisual transmission to the network circumstances will be required. To successfully adapt the transmission parameters, knowledge about the user perception during mobile video calls is required. This paper addresses this issue and presents a study of quality experience during selected periods of emulated video calls. Perception of dynamic phenomena, such as roaming between network technologies, switching the video and speech codecs, and changing the video bit rate during active calls are in scope of the investigation. The QoE of the analysed material is linked to the underlying transmission properties, which allows to select proper strategies of QoE adaptation during mobile video calls in future wireless networks.

This paper presents a new quality evaluation model for stereoscopic videos using depth map segmentation. This study includes both objective and subjective evaluation. The goal of this study is to understand the effect of different depth levels on the overall 3D quality. Test sequences with different coding schemes are used. The results show that overall quality has a strong correlation with the quality of the background, where disparity is smaller relative to the foreground. The results also showed that content type is an important factor in determining the visual quality. While depth segmentation gives information related to 3D perception, additional work is required to develop an objective metric.

To guide the practitioner's work in choosing between assessment methods, defined criteria to compare their benefits, costs, and limitations are needed. The goal of this paper is two-fold. Firstly, we develop an extensive comparison model to guide between-method comparisons based on a literature review. The model is composed of four main criteria, called economy, excellence, implementation and assessment with a total of 24 sub-criteria. Secondly, we conduct a comparison study between two mixed methods in which a subset of criteria of the model is examined. We compare Open Profiling of Quality utilizing individuals' own vocabulary and Conventional Profiling utilizing fixed vocabulary in their descriptive evaluation. The study is conducted with naïve participants with varying 3D video qualities on a mobile device. The results compare both methods on a subset of comparison criteria and show that operationalization of the developed comparison model can provide a tool for holistic methods comparison.

One of the most interesting applications of single — sided Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics is their use in improving the quality of the service, as perceived by the user. This can be done either at the application level — by for example changing the encoding in use, or the level of error correction applied — or at the network level, for instance by choosing a different DiffServ marking strategy, or changing the access network in use. To this end, the QoE metric used needs to be fast and accurate, and the context in which the application will be used needs to provide the opportunity for performing some sort of control operation. In this paper we describe the application of QoE estimations for VoIP to improve existing network — level mobility management solutions.

This can be done either at the application level — by for example changing the encoding in use, or the level of error correction applied — or at the network level, for instance by choosing a different DiffServ marking strategy, or changing the access network in use. To this end, the QoE metric used needs to be fast and accurate, and the context in which the application will be used needs to provide the opportunity for performing some sort of control operation. In this paper we describe the application of QoE estimations for VoIP to improve existing network — level mobility management solutions.","PeriodicalId":6441,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Quality of Multimedia Experience","volume":"80 3 1","pages":"19-24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90939384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we investigate whether the presence of audio with different quality levels can influence the outcome of subjective visual quality assessment in a Digital Cinema setting. We asked the participants to judge the visual quality when watching an audiovisual content in a Digital Cinema environment and investigated whether the participants can neglect the presence and the quality of audio. The stimuli used were 10 seconds long color sequences accompany with orchestral music at 2K resolution, 24 fps, and YCbCr 4:4:4 played on DCI certified equipment. The result show that in visual only subjective quality assessment, the presence of audio (low or high quality) does not significantly influence on the visual quality judgment.
