This paper discusses the results achieved in a technology-transfer project in the vehicle domain. The results extend the state-of-the art and practice in the area of model-driven development and execution of predictable vehicular embedded systems by developing new techniques, implementing them in the existing industrial tools and validating them using industrial use cases and prototype demonstrators. In this context, the paper also discusses some important lessons learned and open challenges.

In most Pacific Island Countries (PICs), the populations reside in isolated communities where electricity generation is hard to access and therefore these communities are heavily dependent on fossil fuel based generation plants. One way to reduce the dependence on these fuels is to use the abundant, albeit intermittent, Renewable Energy Sources (RES). At present most RES based microgrids (MGs) use lead acid battery batteries as the only way to store energy, which can be detrimental for the environment. This paper proposes to minimize the ecological impact support them by using Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS) so as to reduce the size of battery strings required or increase the storage performance of the MG. A case study on data for a small village in Taveuni (Fiji) is presented and the advantages of using a FESS as a back-up storage system are highlighted and discussed.

Increasing price of fossil fuels and public awareness encouraged many countries to use clean technologies in transport and electricity generation sector. The advent of smart meters can identify unbalance in PV-EV distribution grid which is a great concern for Distribution Service Operators (DSOs). Several researchers have accessed the degree of unbalance and impact of unbalance on distribution grids considering either distributed PV or EVs. Moreover, a few research work has been done for mitigating unbalance till now. This paper measures unbalance due to unequal distribution of loads and sources among three phases and assess the impact of unbalance on power quality of the PV-EV distribution system by considering different PV and EV penetration levels using DigSILENT Power Factory simulation software. An improved method is proposed to mitigate unbalance using Genetic Algorithm by optimizing load distribution among phases. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed method is evaluated considering unequally distributed residential and EV load scenarios, and it is found that the proposed method can reduce a significant amount of unbalance at all the buses of the distribution grid.

LC filters are widely used in power electronic systems for extracting the specific frequency band component, or absorbing harmonics. In the low-frequency harmonic filtering applications, bulky inductors and capacitors are implemented for low cutoff frequency, which contribute to high percent of volume, weight, cost, and failure rate. Recently, to exceed the limitations of the bulky inductors, a two-terminal active inductor concept has been proposed, which is implemented by power switches and energy storage elements. It has the same impedance characteristic at the frequencies of interest and has potential to replacing the bulky inductors in the LC filters. In order to explore the benefits of the new concept, this paper compares the performance of DC-link LC filters with a two-terminal active inductor and a passive inductor for a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. Benchmarking in terms of inductive energy storage, volume, and weight are compared. The electro-thermal and reliability performance of the filtering capacitors in the two filters are also investigated. Experimental results are provided to verify the accuracy of the theoretical analyses.

This paper proposed a single-stage soft-switching AC/DC converter without soft-switching auxiliary circuit. The proposed AC/DC converter only uses two main active switches to execute the input power factor correction and regulate the output dc voltage magnitude. Thus, the input power factor is high and the input current distortion is low on the ac input side. Moreover, the output DC voltage is stable and its ripple is low. Although the proposed AC/DC converter does not include soft-switching auxiliary circuit, the all main semiconductors can switch at soft-switching condition. Thus, the circuit topology is simple and the circuit cost is low. Furthermore, the proposed AC/DC converter does not also include front-end four-diode rectifier on the ac input side. The conduction losses can also be reduced. The proposed AC/DC converter uses a simple frequency modulation control strategy to synthesize a low harmonics sinusoidal input current waveform and achieve well dynamic regulation function. A design example of 600W single-stage soft-switching AC/DC converter is examined to assess its performance.

This paper presents a comparative study conducted on the performance of the commonly used object tracking and location prediction algorithms for mobile robot navigation in a dynamically cluttered and GPS-denied mining environment. The study was done to test the different algorithms for the same set criteria (such as accuracy and computational time) under the same conditions.The identified commonly used algorithms for object tracking and location prediction of moving objects used in this investigation are Kalman filter (KF), extended Kalman filter (EKF) and particle filter (PF). The study results of those algorithms are analyzed and discussed in this paper. A trade-off was apparent. However, in overall performance KF has shown its competitiveness.The result from the study has found that the KF based algorithm provides better performance in terms of accuracy in tracking dynamic objects under commonly used benchmarks. This finding can be used in development of an efficient robot navigation algorithm.

In actual industrial processes, it is difficult to optimize parameters for a control system because of its perturbations. As a result, the performance of the control system may depend on a designer experience. To solve this problem, we have proposed a method to optimize the controller parameters with support vector machine. With the proposed method, we can obtain a robust controller without the need for designer's rich experience. Experimental results show that the proposed method enables us to design parameters for a robust controller in a two-wheeled inverted pendulum.

The modeling and implementation of a 9-level switched-capacitor (SC) boost DC-AC inverter is presented by combining an active-harmonic-elimination (AHE) controller for realizing a staircase inversion and closed-loop regulation. In this 9-level SC inverter, there are three pumping capacitors and bidirectional switches used between supply VS and output Vout in order to obtain the maximum gain of 4 as well as the inverted gain of 4 at most. For achieving a staircase AC output, these bidirectional switches are driven by the clock generator so as to boost/invert Vout into 1x, 2x, 3x, or 4x voltage of VS. Here, the AHE technique is employed not only to manipulate the time durations of the output levels of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x for the elimination of the 3rd, 5th, 7th harmonics, but also to enhance the regulation capability for the different desired output. Further, the relevant modeling and some theoretical analysis are included. The performance of this inverter is simulated and verified experimentally on the implemented prototype circuit to show the efficacy of this scheme.
