In this paper, we consider the estimation of a reference shape from a set of different segmentation results using both active contours and information theory. The reference shape is defined as the minimum of a criterion that benefits from both the mutual information and the joint entropy of the input segmentations and is then called a mutual shape. This energy criterion is here justified using similarities between information theory quantities and area measures, and presented in a continuous variational framework. This framework brings out some interesting evaluation measures such as the specificity and sensitivity. In order to solve this shape optimization problem, shape derivatives are computed for each term of the criterion and interpreted as an evolution equation of an active contour. Some synthetical examples allow us to cast the light on the difference between our mutual shape and an average shape. Our framework has been considered for the estimation of a mutual shape for the evaluation of cardiac segmentation methods in MRI.

The estimation of dependence relationships between variables is generally performed using probabilistic models. However, these models are not adapted to imprecise data and they cannot easily take into account symbolic information such as experts opinions. On the contrary, evidence theory also called theory of belief function, allow to integrate these kinds of uncertainties. In this paper we propose regression analysis based on a fuzzy extension of belief function theory, applied to image quality assessment problem. For a given input vector x of relevant images feature, the method provides a prediction regarding the value of the output variable y which represents the score of subjective image quality test, namely the DMOS value. To validate the proposed approach, experiments are conducted on LIVE image database. The proposed measure is compared with algorithms based on general regression as neural networks and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The framework of this paper is of nature subjective and results show that our approach performs well and illustrate the interest of the theory of belief function in this context.

This paper addresses the problem of ultrasound image restoration within a Bayesian framework. The distribution of the ultrasound image is assumed to be a generalized Gaussian distribution (GGD). The main contribution of this work is to propose a hierarchical Bayesian model for estimating the GGD parameters. The Bayesian estimators associated with this model are difficult to be expressed in closed form. Thus we investigate a Markov chain Monte Carlo method which is used to generate samples asymptotically distributed according to the posterior of interest. These generated samples are finally used to compute the Bayesian estimators of the GGD parameters. The performance of the proposed Bayesian model is tested with synthetic data and compared with the performance obtained with the expectation maximization algorithm.

Classical visual attention models neither consider social cues, such as faces, nor auditory cues, such as speech. However, faces are known to capture visual attention more than any other visual features, and recent studies showed that speech turn-taking affects the gaze of non-involved viewers. In this paper, we propose an audiovisual saliency model able to predict the eye movements of observers viewing other people having a conversation. Thanks to a speaker diarization algorithm, our audiovisual saliency model increases the saliency of the speakers compared to the addressees. We evaluated our model with eye-tracking data, and found that it significantly outperforms visual attention models using an equal and constant saliency value for all faces.

Developing a metric that can reliably predict the perceptual 3D quality as perceived by the end user, is a challenging issue and a necessary tool for the success of 3D multimedia applications. The various attempts at predicting 3D quality of experience as the combination of 2D quality of the left and right images have shown their limitations, and particularly for the case of asymmetric distortions. In this paper we propose a full reference quality assessment metric for stereoscopic images based on the perceptual binocular characteristics. The proposed metric handles effectively the asymmetric distortions of stereoscopic images, by incorporating human visual system (HVS) characteristics. Our approach was motivated by the fact that in case of asymmetric quality, 3D perception mechanisms supports the view providing the most important and contrasted information. To achieve that, weighting factors are defined for the quality of each view according to the local information content. Add to that, to take into account the sensitivity of the HVS, quality score of each region are modulated based on the Binocular Just Noticeable Difference (BJND). Experimental results show that the proposed metric correlates better with human perception than the state-of-the-art metrics.

Optical motion capture systems have been widely adopted for human motion analysis in stroke rehabilitation because of real-time processing and high-accuracy features. However, these systems require a large laboratory space and multiple cameras and thus can be expensive and not transportable. In this paper, we propose a portable, cheap, single-camera motion analysis system to implement upper limb movement analysis. The proposed system consists of video acquisition, camera calibration, marker tracking, autonomous joint angle calculation, visualization, validation and classification. The validation with a state-of-the-art optical motion analysis system using Bland-Altman plot, a typical clinical measure, indicates that the proposed system can accurately capture elbow movement, trunk-tilt, and shoulder movement for diagnosis. Furthermore, the volunteers are explicitly classified into healthy and stroke groups via a support vector machine trained on statistics of the trunk-tilt and shoulder movement. Experimental results show that the proposed system can accurately capture the upper limb movement patterns, automatically classify stroke survivors using ordinal scale classification of upper limb impairment, and offer a convenient and inexpensive solution for upper limb movement analysis.

This paper addresses the reconstruction of sea surface currents from satellite ocean sensing data. Whereas the classical surface currents derived from the SSH (Sea Surface Height) products are rather low space-time resolution fields (typically, 50 km and 12-day actual space-time grid resolution), we investigate the extent to which we can retrieve sea surface currents at higher resolution using daily SST (Sea Surface Temperature) satellite observations. State-of-the-art methods, which exploit classical optical flow schemes or nonlinear regression techniques, do not provide satisfactory results due to the space-time variabilities of the relationships between the SST and the sea surface current. Motivated by our recent joint SST-SSH identification of characterization of upper ocean dynamical modes, we here show that a multiregime model, formally stated as a Markov-switching latent class regression model, provides a relevant model to capture the above-mentioned variabilities and reconstruct SST-driven sea surface currents. The considered case study within the Agulhas current demonstrates that our model retrieves highresolution space-time details which cannot be resolved by the classical SSH-derived products.

This paper deals with the problem of image colorization. A model including total variation regularization is proposed. Our approach colorizes directly the three RGB channels, while most existing methods were only focusing on the two chrominance channels. By using the three channels, our approach is able to better preserve color consistency. Our model is non convex, but we propose an efficient primal-dual like algorithm to compute a local minimizer. Numerical examples illustrate the good behavior of our algorithm with respect to state-of-the-art methods.

We present an optical flow technique in a differential projected framework adapted to local myocardial motion estimation from MR Tagged images. The algorithm is based on the Dual Tree design of Hilbert transform pairs of wavelet bases. Such a design allows one to construct several orientation-sensitive wavelet filters for better analysis of the complex motion of the heart. The complex wavelet transform (CWT) integrates both energy and phase information in the wavelets coefficients for an effective motion estimation. The CWT also provides a high frequency analysis and enjoys a multiresolution aspect that allows multiscale flow estimate. Performances of the algorithm are evaluated on synthetic tagged MRI sequences for both displacement and strain estimation.

The algorithm is based on the Dual Tree design of Hilbert transform pairs of wavelet bases. Such a design allows one to construct several orientation-sensitive wavelet filters for better analysis of the complex motion of the heart. The complex wavelet transform (CWT) integrates both energy and phase information in the wavelets coefficients for an effective motion estimation. The CWT also provides a high frequency analysis and enjoys a multiresolution aspect that allows multiscale flow estimate. Performances of the algorithm are evaluated on synthetic tagged MRI sequences for both displacement and strain estimation.","PeriodicalId":6856,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73962221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper introduces a new technique for compressive sampling reconstruction of biomedical ultrasound images that exploits two types of prior information. On the one hand, our proposed approach is based on the observation that ultrasound RF echoes are best characterised statistically using alpha-stable distributions. On the other hand, through knowledge of the acquisition process, the support of the RF echoes in the Fourier domain can be easily inferred. Together, these two facts inform an iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) algorithm, which is shown to outperform previously proposed reconstruction techniques, both visually and in terms of two objective evaluation measures.
