The ultimate purpose of the circulatory system is the maintenance of an exchange of oxygen, water, electrolytes, nutrients and metabolites across capillary walls, which is adequate to the rate of cellular metabolism. The movement of molecules between the circulating blood and the extravascular tissue spaceb is known to occur generally at rates many times that of blood flow itself. The capillary endothelium is considered to take no active part in this transfer, but to behave as a porous membrane through which molecules may pass with extreme rapidity. It is also a well-established fact that diffusion predominates in this transcapillary exchange, taking place at a rate in accordance with the chemical conccntration gradient and physicochemical properties of the particular substance [21]. The molecules of water diffuse freely between the plasma and the tissue fluid. Nevertheless. net movements of fluid across the capillary membrane take place by filtration in response to disequilibrium of hydrostatic and osmotic forces, acting over the capillary wall. This nowadays generally accepted concept of the exchange of fluid across capillary membranes goes

The immunological efficacy and the absence of communicability of live attenuated measles virus vaccine has been described by Katz &, Enders [8] and others [l, 2, 4, 7 , 9-11, 13-18, 21, 241. Since immunity to natural measles infection shortly after vaccination has also been reported [6, 7, 14, 151, the final acceptance of the vaccine for routine pediatric immunization will presumably depend on the persistence of the immunity conferred and on the severity of reaction to vaccination. According to earlier studies, fever and rash may result from the vaccination. It is generally concluded, however, that the reactions are mild and that the “wellbeing” of the children with reactions is apparent [lo]. On the other hand, vaccination may occasionally be accompanied by high fever and malaise [18]. It has also been shown that marked reduction in such reactions can be obtained with small doses of gamma-globulin without suppression of the antibody response [17, 181. The present study has been undertaken mainly to gain further information re-

Only a relatively small number of investigations concerning the incidence of suicides and suicidal attempts in childhood and adolescence have been published. There are also good reasons for assuming that the figures vary from country to country, and that the results are not universally valid, since the frequency of suicides in relation to the total population shows important variations in different countries [l, 5, 9, 13, 151. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the frequency of suicides and suicidal attempts in Swedish children and adolescents. It was further considered to be of interest to collect data on the social background of the patients, the method of and the reasons for the attempted suicide. In this survey no attempt has been made to penetrate in detail the psychological and psychiatric problems underlying suicidal attempts made by children and adolescents.
