[System Concept of Production Design and Development in Scrap and Metal Recycling].

The present system concept of metal and scrap recycling plants deals with possible effects of renewed legislative amendments and evaluates legal and technological as well as economical aspects of the value stream oriented shredder process. It is a system oriented approach to point out the main influencing factors on the development of shredder plants in scrap and metal recycling. Those factors are being merged into a superordinate system concept used to support strategic management decisions regarding future investments in the waste treatment sector.Under the given legal circumstances, the shredder process itself has to be resource-friendly, energy- and cost-efficient while still following the stated emission limit values. Therefore, the conceptual focus lies in the argumentation and evaluation of technical challenges as a major result of the implementation of national and international legal terms in the age of volatile market conditions, present recession, and value decline in prematerial compositions. The system concept is the result of a research project from October 2016 to December 2019 at the TSR Recycling GmbH & Co. KG, Lünen, Germany. The concept itself forms a base for the development of plant technology in other metal recycling fields, such as e‑waste recycling. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, the model is extended to other and further influencing factors and helps to understand the short lifespan of theoretical modelling within the field of scrap metal recycling.

The Resources Innovation Center Leoben at the Montanuniversität Leoben has been organizing a conference series called East and South East Europe Dialogue Conferences since 2014. At the end of 2020, the online version of the conference was used to allow various stakeholders in the raw materials sector, as well as experts on the topic of brain drain, to have their say. The article outlines the tension between brain drain and brain circulation and shows possibilities and future steps to initiate cooperation with East and South East Europe and thus contribute to Brain Circulation, the multidirectional flow of manpower and knowledge.

[Dynamic Transfer Chute to Improve Efficiency of Belt Conveyors]. [

At transfer points for bulk materials, transfer chutes are required between two belt conveyors. Depending on the conveyed bulk material, these chute systems often cause wear, caking, and poor material handling. Wear occurs both on the chute walls and on the downstream conveyor belt. Caking on the chute walls is oftencaused by the cohesive fine-grained particles of the bulk material. Especially wet bulk material can lead to clogging of the chutes. Bulk material handling is ideal when the bulk material is loaded centrally onto the downstream conveyor. Furthermore, feeding in conveying direction of the downstream belt conveyor and a material deflection by the chute with minimum wear are also required for ideal bulk material handling. At the "Chair of Mining Engineering and Mineral Economics-Conveying Technology and Design Methods" in cooperation with the companies ScrapeTec Trading GmbH, ScrapeTec GmbH and WanggoGummitechnik GmbH, a new dynamic transfer chute is currently being developed, since standard chute systems are often unable to optimally perform the tasks assigned to them.

A two-year vocational training course "Rock Engineering for Deep Mines" (SafeDeepMining) was designed under the auspices of the Chair of Mining Engineering and Mineral Economics at the Montanuniversität Leoben. It is aimed at remedying the lack of highly qualified rock mechanics experts for deep mines, who will be possible to effectively tackle the rock pressure problems that endanger the mining of deep mineral deposits. The stated objective of "SafeDeepMining" is to provide state-of-the-art training in rock mechanics to mining engineers, government officials and consulting and university personnel to assist the European mining industry in managing rock pressure hazards that threaten its future underground operations.

[Green Deal-Chances and Risks for the Mineral Raw Materials Industry].

The Mineral Raw Materials Industry was hit severely by COVID-19. Declines in production and collapsing demands characterize the year 2020. The EU Commission's proposal to raise the 2030 greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, including emissions and removals from 40 to at least 55%, poses a challenge for the European industry, especially the energy-intensive one. The European Commission's idea for a carbon border tax adjustment mechanism and sustainable finance models (sustainable finance and taxonomy) are currently the subject of controversial debate. Economic burdens on specific branches and the industrial site have to be taken into account, if a carbon leakage scenario is to be avoided and if Europe has to be given a fair chance to stay competitive in spite of an ambitious climate policy. It is important, not only to protect climate and environment, but also the European industry, jobs and social system. The transformation towards a sustainable economy and society necessitates an increasing demand of mineral raw materials and electrical energy. Only through developing resilient value chains a sufficient supply of raw materials can be achieved.
