The objective of this study was to determine patients' perception on the possibility of changing a tradition-based practice to a more patient-empowering service, thus demonstrating that nurses can make a difference in providing a more patient-centred environment. The study revealed that the patients themselves wanted to be included in the decision-making process and actively embrace change.

The purpose of this randomised controlled trial was to determine if patients showed a preference for preoperative hair removal with razors or clippers and to identify if one method was associated with more trauma or postoperative infections. The trial took place in a day surgery unit with patients who were having a range of surgical procedures including hernias and varicose veins. This study was sponsored by an award from the NATN/3M Clinical Fellowship.

Dear AfPP We have recently had an incident where members of the press contacted theatres directly requesting information relating to a high profile patient who was undergoing emergency surgery. As the incident happened at night when there was minimal staff throughout the whole hospital, we were unable to access the usual resources for dealing with press enquiries. The incident has created discussion among staff as to how a similar incident should be dealt with in future, and also in relation to professional codes of conduct and patient confidentiality. We are also aware that one of our consultant surgeons wishes to involve the media in filming an operative procedure and we are concerned about this proposal. Can AfPP advise on these issues? Anxious from Aberdeen

According to The Sunday Times Good Hospital Guide (2004), the Mater Hospital scored highest for waiting lists, admitting 84% of inpatients within six months of referral. To achieve this result the Trust was originally invited by commissioners to submit a bid to develop a service which ensures that patients currently waiting for elective surgery receive it as quickly as possible.

Is bladder volume of concern to the perioperative team when the patient is undergoing a procedure not related to the same anatomical area? A common scenario is that the patient is requested to void prior to leaving the ward and their word taken that they have done so. The patient then enters the theatre environment and the only time that urinary function is taken into account is if the blood pressure falls and kidney function needs to be monitored.

The aim of this case study is to discuss the clinical management of a non-heart beating organ donor. This case study will concentrate in particular on the clinical assessment of the potential donor patient undertaken by the donor transplant coordinator (DTC) and the donation process up to the time of transplantation. The author will also describe the differences between heart beating and non-heart beating donors and discuss how transplantation can benefit renal recipient patients.
