Author describes the place of biopsy in the diagnosis of osteoarticular tumors. Attention is called to the determination of the optimal site of the biopsy according to the different regions of the body. His opinion is that in malignant osteoarticular tumors biopsy with surgical exposure may be suggested now too. The field of indication for the needle biopsy is small. (e.g. proving metastasis etc.) With an adequate technique of the removal of samples the proportion of the local recurrence in limb saving operations can be reduced.

Authors examined during the trial of a CO2 laser of type TUNGSRAM TLS-61 the possibility of its use in the orthopaedic surgery. The output necessary to cut the skin and bony tissue, the speed of cutting and the extension of tissue necrosis were determined in experiments in vitro and in vivo. According to their observation the fusion of the bone cut with CO2 laser takes the same time as after the traditional osteotomy, however in the first three weeks the callus formation falls behind. The possibility of a curved cutting and of the coagulation haemostasis may ensure a fine prospect to this method.

Authors demonstrate, based on animal experiment first in the literature of this country both the synthetic and the natural (coral) apatite as a bone substituting material. Complete and partial bone defects in 24 animals of the experience were filled with the materials examined. The speed of healing after the transplantation of the two implants, the mechanical characteristics of the healing bone (fracture solidity) are evaluated using both materials and in both types of the defect. It is stated that evaluable difference could not be observed from the viewpoint of the duration of healing between the two materials whereas considering the fracture solidity the coral substitution proved to be significantly better. The differences between the groups considering the complications (suppuration, pseudoarthrosis) are also assessed.

Authors tested modified and new sutures and different sewing materials on the deep flexor tendons of the hand in cadavera. Tensile and pull strength examinations were performed. The results were compared with the Kirchmayr-Kessler suture. Suture types suitable for immediate postoperative active motion exercises are suggested.

Wiltse's spondylodesis was performed in 111 patients in the Department of Orthopaedics, National Institute for Rhelvmatology and Physiotherapy between 1978-1982. 58 of them were reexamined by the authorsclinically and radiologically more than 5 years after the operation. In 47 of the 58 patients good or adequate clinical results were found whereas in 43 cases the development of bone bridge could be observed. Attention is called to the good operative indication and the exact operative technique.

In the treatment of scolioses of different origin the spondylodeses performed from a dorsal exposure have an outstanding role. For the fixation of the spine several instruments were constructed; one of them is the Cotrel-Dubousset Instrumentation used since 1983 by which it became possible, beside the spinal correction and fixation in three dimensions, the omission of the external fixation devices. Authors report on the first experiences in Hungary with the CDI system on five patients and state that from the numerous advantages of the CDI the expansion of correction possibilities, the development the physiological spinal curvatures, the correction in three dimensions and the omission of the external fixation are outstanding.

After review of the pertinent literature authors report on a new tendon transfer technique not having been found in the available literature. The method has been considered suitable for the treatment of patellar dislocations due to erroneous stretching direction occurring before the end of growth. The semitendinous muscle was separated and transfosed in the tunnel drilled into the patella. By means of this technique the function of the muscle was used against the lateralization tendency of the patella. The paper presents the follow-up of 9 cases.
