Technologists'Attitudes Regarding Social Networking and Implications for Managers.
Pub Date : 2014-11-01
Kelli Welch Haynes, Courtney Cooper Richardson, Laura Aaron

Social networking has both positive and negative implications and can be an excellent communication and networking tool or it can have detrimental consequences. Healthcare workers, including radiologic technologists, need to be aware of the possible impli- cations of their online postings. Radiologic technologists are extensively using and accessing social media sites and should have appropriate profes- sional boundaries. Radiology administrators should assure that technologists are aware of policies related to social networking. Employee education regarding negative implica- tions may prove helpful; creating a radi- ology department with sound ethical standards.

Near Miss Reporting.
Pub Date : 2014-11-01
Janine M Jones, Michael F Newman

Imaging is no stranger to patient safety events. There was a tremendous opportunity at WakeMed in North Carolina to change the safety culture of the imag- ing services department and provide staff with a system that rewarded them for identifying safety risks. Most staff could articulate the difference between a near miss and an actual event, but very few staff knew how to report a near miss. Staff who did know how to report a near miss believed the online process was too lengthy. Staff also reported a fear of punitive action associated with reporting events. Imaging services leadership successfully developed and implemented a "Good Catch" program. One of the most important objectives of the program was to remove the negative stigma associated with near miss reporting.

Defining Population Health and Implications for Radiology.
Pub Date : 2014-11-01
Ronald V Bucci

Most definitions of population health include improved patient health, reduced inpatient stays and proce- dures, holistic care of the entire population of a country, and a general approach to improve the quality of healthcare. However, there seems to be no mention of payment for services and resources for reimbursement. The term population health can be considered a philosophy of a new model of healthcare based upon future expectations from current laws and studies from the federal government, most notably through the ACA, and healthcare organizations. Radiology departments may perform fewer procedures in the future and receive less money for these complet- ed procedures. Management will need to adjust budgets and staffing to reflect changes. Radiology departments will need to continue the current trend of doing more with less.

Mobile Apps in Radiology.
Pub Date : 2014-11-01
Tammy L Jones, Emily A Schlautman

Medical applications are being created in imaging with the goal that radiologists will be able to use them to interpret patient images. Mobile devices, such as the iPad, are able to display radiologic images in such a way that radiologists are able to use them successfully. The alternative approach of using mobile devices for viewing and making a diagnosis could prove to be immensely helpful in emergency situations where no workstations are available. The use of mobile devices would not replace workstations for radiologists, but rather it would advance their ability to expedite dictations for more effective patient care.

Competencies in Imaging Administration.

"In order to support the front line staff and create a high quality, successful imaging department, the administrative team must be made up of a variety of compe- tent leaders, including the imaging direc- tor/administrator, PACS/RIS administra- tor, and radiation safety officer. " The core competencies of an imaging director include demonstrated expertise in human resources, asset management, fiscal management, communication, and operations. " PACS/RIS administrators must possess skill sets that bridge the domains of a radiologic technologist, informa- tion systems analyst, and imaging administrator-competencies can be placed into three categories: behavioral, business, and technical. " Oversight of the radiation safety pro- gram is provided by the RSO, who must meet certain qualifications related to education, training, and experience required by the Nuclear Regulatory Com- mission and other state licensing and regulatory agencies where applicable.

Conflict Management: A Literature Review and Study.
Pub Date : 2014-09-01
Sally Erin Howell

"Management of conflict is extremely important for the effective functioning of organizations and for the personal, cultural, and social development of individuals. The manner in which the conflict is managed can cause more tension in the situation rather than the conflict itself. " This literature review analyzes five modes to dealing with conflict along two dimensions of behavior: compet- ing (assertive and uncooperative), accommodating (unassertive and cooperative), avoiding (unassertive and uncooperative), compromising (falls into the middle), and collaborat- ing (assertive and cooperative). " In a study, technologists preferred a cooperating conflict management style when feelings have not yet esca- lated, and a compromising conflict management style after the conflict has become heated. The study also showed education.level did not have any effect on their preferred conflict management styles.

How to Create a World Class Dose Reduction Program.

W Geoffrey West

"Effective dose reduction is best accom- plished using a multifaceted approach. Protocol optimization, proper use of scanner features, patient dose tracking and analysis, and staff training are among the many, important elements that should be addressed. *A dose reduction committee should be composed of the radiology administrator or center manager, the chief or supervising radiologist, the diagnostic medical physicist, and the chief technologist for each x-ray based modality. "Once responsibilities have been assigned and a timeline set, start with CT and establish baseline doses, make sure existing hardware and software is being used properly, optimize proto- cols, evaluate new hardware and software needs, and, then track and analyze patient doses to measure progress. " Once the dose reduction program is up and running, ensure that key stakeholders are educated about it and that its existence, purpose and results are communicated to patients and the surrounding community.

Comparison of procedure costs of various percutaneous tumor ablation modalities.
Pub Date : 2014-07-01
Seyed A Astani, Manuel L Brown, Kay Steusloff

Microwave ablation, radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, and irreversible electroporation are percutaneous ablation modalities commonly employed to treat tumors. The procedure cost of treating the same lesion with each of the four modalities is compared. A cost model was created for each ablation modality estimating the cost of treating a tumor based on the number of probes required, which is estimated by the tumor size.Total cost of treating a 3 cm kidney lesion with each modality was individually calculated. There was a strongly positive and statistically significant relationship between estimated cost based on the cost modules and actual cost for all procedures. The number of required probes is the dominant factor in determining the cost of an ablation procedure. The most expensive ablation modalities in decreasing order are irreversible electroporation, cryoablation, and microwave and radiofrequency ablations.
