A photometric procedure for evaluating non-standardized X-ray films is described. The X-ray series of a total of 23 patients operated on because of idiopathic scoliosis have been measured out. In 16 patients Harrington's method with dorsal spondylodesis was applied and in 7 patients an electrical stimulation with an implanted stimulator was additionally employed. A time-saving effect of about 30 per cent for the osseous consolidation is obtained by this method. The fundamental suitability of the photometric procedure can be demonstrated.

60 out of 69 (87%) patients were reexaminated after operation for a trauma of the actomioclavicular articulation of type TOSSY III. The evaluation includes functional, radiological and cosmetical-subjective criterions. The surgical treatment consists of fixation of the clavicula to the coracoid with screw figure-of-eight suture and suture or plastic of the ligament. The results correspond to those of other surgical techniques.

The simple mechanical models and experimental spinal examinations could be established that the double curved scoliosis operated with two Harrington rods and dorsal spondylodesis is better than the use of one Harrington rod.

We analysed the postoperative position of the patella and the degenerative changes in 80 implanted Guepar, Tillmann and GSB-prostheses of the knee. We did not found differences between the types of endoprostheses. We saw many dislocations of the patella, especially in patients with rheumatism, but only some patients had trouble with the operated knee. We can diminish these problems by modelling of the patella and by careful reconstruction of the muscle strength.

During the first two years following the foundation of the Orthopaedic Clinic of Frankfurt (O.) (1985/1986) occurred connected with the procedure of hip arthroplasty by reason of failing technical teamwork of the operation steam 20 fractures of the Trochanter major. By means of aetiological-biomechanical analysis and a roentgenological classification three groups of fractures which require different therapeutic measures are described. Experiences with our treatment and the development of this complication are demonstrated.

A stress fracture is a typical case of an injury induced by mechanical overloading of the locomotoric system. Especially, the paper deals with aetiopathogenetic factors in connection with occupational exposures and with criteria for recognizing a stress fracture as an occupational disease. A case of a ballet-dancer who suffered from a stress fracture of the fibula illustrates the development and the course of a typical stress fracture.

In this paper we report one case of a poor rarely benign lesion of bone. We describe the clinical, radiological and histological diagnosis and differential-diagnostic procedures. Good results of operative treatment were reported after excochleation and transplantation of allogen or autogen bone-chips.

A report was made on a 25 year old patient with a penetrating heart injury with basic diagnosis, and treatment. A successful management was a result of good performance of the resuscitation chain, exactness of the clinical diagnosis and interdisciplinary cooperation between surgeons and anaesthetists.

Lumbar disc diseases have become more and more significant among orthopaedic patients. In the submitted retrospective study the results of the clinical examination and of the lumbar myelography are compared with the intra-operative findings. The evaluation of the clinical records of 73 patients operated on for damaged intervertebral disc at the Orthopaedic Clinic of the County Hospital Aue between 1978 and 1988 results in the advice not to do without a lumbar myelography during the pre-operative diagnosis before an intended nucleotomy. This assertion is based on the fact that with nearly 90 per cent of the patients the myelographic findings were intra-operatively confirmed.

Artificial joint replacement of the wrist requires careful consideration of anatomic and mechanical factors as well as appreciation of the implant fixation techniques. This study presents experience with nine total wrist arthroplasties by the Meuli method in exclusively female patients after an average follow-up period of 7 8/12 years. On the basis of this evaluation and comparison to the results described by other authors cemented wrist prosthesis have shown an unacceptably high rate of failure especially because of loosening problems.
