Modulations of spongiosa density in the femoral head of rabbits by atherosclerosis. In a long-term study 31 rabbits (+5 control animals) were fed about 20 weeks on a diet rich in cholesterol. An important observation in this study was, that spongiosa density in the femoral head decreases after cholesterol rich diet in contrast to the control group. This effect could be modulated by the Trapidil AR 12463 content (50 mg/die) of the diet, but not by the high density lipoprotein application. Serum cholesterol levels and induced atherosclerosis were determined. Correlations between spongiosa density and atherosclerosis were discussed.

Indomethacin for prophylaxis of para-articular ossifications (PAO) after Total-Hip-Replacement We studied in a retrospective clinical trial the effect of indomethacin on the prevention of formation of heterotopic bone after total hip replacement. Compared were the grade lesions of ossification (described by Arcq) in the group of 63 patients that had received with the group of patients without indomethacin. Significantly fewer patients (p less than or equal to 0.001) who had received indomethacin had formation of heterotopic bone compared with the control group.

Examination of femoro-tibial torsion in patellar instability. A contribution to pathogenesis of recurrent and habitual dislocation of patella. In a CT-study are examined the angle of tibial torsion, femoral antetorsion, femoro-tibial rotation and tibio-femoral index as well as the habitual step angle by direct measurement in 40 patients with recurrent in habitual dislocation of the patella and in 10 normal persons. In comparison to the control group the femoral antetorsion and the femoro-tibial rotation in the pathological group were significantly increased. Results are discussed in regard of pathogenesis and operative treatment of patella dislocation.

Computer-assisted Infrared Thermometry in Orthopaedics. Infrared Thermometry is a relative new non-invasive medico examination technic. The short period of the measured heat of the body surface demanded a special surveying equipment. That's why in the Consultant Orthopaedic Hospital Bad Düben a computer-assisted measuring system was developed. By using this system we have good experience in the postoperative control of wound healing, in the judgement of stress-fracture and in the rheumatic-orthopaedics.

Historical review in treatment of supracondylar numerous fractures. The treatment of fracture of the supracondylar humerus is already published in the antiquity. The statistic of medical attendance demonstrates, that the most authors claim the arrangement of the fracture immediately by extension of the forearm in inflexion of 90 grade. The best retention is the immobility of the arm by inflexion of 90 grade. Moreover it is necessary to inspection daily and if required the new reposition. Today the historical aspects instruct, the most frequent treatment is the extension at the right-angled flexed forearm and the retention in the same position.

The scientific achievements of the surgeon Ernst von Bergmann (1836-1907) for the development of medicine in reflection to his letters between 1877 and 1878. The name of Ernst von Bergmann is connected closely with the history of the university of Berlin. Because of his dedicated work and his outstanding achievements in the filed of medicine he be came the leading representative of German surgery at the end of the 19. century. He obtained special international reputation by his scientific, sanitary-political and military-surgery activity in the time of the Bulgarian war of liberation (1877-1878). His letters and writings enable the reader nowadays to complete the hitherto existing picture of Ernst von Bergmann by new aspects.

150 knees were re-examined and rated with a modified Bentley-score to estimate the results of the conservative treatment of chondromalacia patellae. 25 several methods in 74 various combinations were used in the treatment. Only injections of Arteparon, short waves and iontophoresis with histamine were applied as single treatment in some knees. None of these methods, applied as single or in combination with other ones, gave results, which were statistically significant better than those of the other ones. In the conservative treatment of chondromalacia patellae the polypragmasy should be stopped and arthro-muscular rehabilitation should be regarded as the principle task.

We reviewed 57 arthroscopic lateral release of the knee-joint during the period from January 1985 to December 1988. A high percentage of chondropathies affecting the patella and the patellofemoral joint was the mainly indication to this surgical operation. Included in the above mentioned cases were 8 traumatic patella luxations. Therefore, the necessity of strict indication and adequate postoperative therapy is emphasized.
