Recent studies reporting significant physiological effects associated with electrical and manual stimulation at several traditional Chinese acupuncture loci are reviewed. Other reports on the anatomy and electrical properties (DC resistance and potential, AC impedance) of these sites indicate that many are significant local skin resistance minima and may also be points of locally more positive DC potential. Further investigation of the basic properties of the acupuncture system and its mode of action is fully warranted by these preliminary findings.

An electromagnetic flowmeter probe was chronically implanted around the ascending aorta in ten dogs. Subsequently, these animals were maintained under halothane (0.75%) anesthesia during the intravenous administration of an ether extract (40 mg/kg) of ginseng. Five other dogs were anesthetized without injecting ginseng. Eleven cardiovascular variables including cardiac output, stroke volume, heart rate, mean arterial pressure, pulse pressure, central venous pressure, total peripheral resistance, pH, PaCO2, PaO2 and base deficit were compared during the ensuing 120 minutes. The heart rate was significantly decreased and central venous pressure increased significantly following ginseng. There were no other meaningful changes in either group.

Twelve cases of acute central cervical spinal cord syndrome were treated by acupuncture and electrical stimulation. The paraesthesia, as well as movements of the hand and upper extremities, were greatly improved immediately after each treatment.

The author relates his experiences in adapting the medium of television to the purpose of health education in rural India. Working under the auspices of the Indian Ministry of Information and UNESCO, he gained experience in the "appropriate" application of sophisticated Western technology to the needs of an underdeveloped area. Television is not a panacea for health education needs, but is nevertheless an important element in an overall health care strategy which must also involve the efforts of health administrators and practitioners at every level of society to further public education and the cultivation of preventive measures.

Japan emerged from feudalism a century ago. Farmers comprise 20 percent of the population of 110 million. The agricultural cooperative movement sponsors 118 hospitals in rural areas. Of these, the Saku Central Hospital is the largest, and provides leadership to a vigorous rural health movement. Its unique outreach program and its contributions to rural health are described, together with remarks about Japan's health situation generally. There may be lessons here for America.

The mental health services in Pakistan are still at the elementary level. There are only a few mental hospitals to look after the psychiatric needs of the country. The discharged patients from the mental hospitals find great difficulty in rehabilitating themselves in the community, particularly when the period of hospitalization has been long. This article discusses a new approach in psychiatric rehabilitation which is relevant to the needs of developing countries.
