Laplace plane analysis of impedance between acupuncture points H-3 and H-4.

The frequency dependence of the skin impedance between two acupuncture points (H-3 and H-4) was determined by Laplace plane analysis of the time domain response to an input voltage perturbation. Both the resistance and capacitance between the acupuncture points differed significantly from the corresponding controls, thus supporting the interpretation of the acupuncture system as an information transfer network.

Fast detoxification of heroin addicts by acupuncture and electrical stimulation (AES) in combination with naloxone.

Detoxification can be accomplished more rapidly by first "flushing" the opiates from the receptor sites. Naloxone, a short acting antagonist displaces opiates from the receptor sites and such displacement precipitates an abstinence syndrome. Recently, a method of using acupuncture and electrical stimulation (AES) in combination with naloxone for fast detoxification was reported. This technique was applied to 50 cases of heroin addicts. Forty-one were detoxified. There were nine failures. Of the 41 cases, 18 patients were sent to rehabilitation centres and did not experience abstinence symptoms. Six were sent out of Hong Kong where heroin is not available, and two others did not go to a rehabilitation centre but still abstained. The other 15 were presumed to be on the drug. It is advocated that AES increases endorphin and relieves abstinence syndrome, but also at the same time inhibits the autonomic nervous system, mainly the parasympathetic nervous system. The technique does not stop the craving, therefore after detoxification, the patients should be sent for psycho-social rehabilitation, or alternatively be put on long acting antagonist.

Chinese alchemy: confluence and transformation.

The study of China's alchemical tradition can provide considerable insight into early Chinese medical theory, pharmaco-therapeutic practice and psychosomatic concepts. Chinese alchemy is a complex blending of philosophical, cosmological, physiological and natural scientific thought. This article presents a historical survey and analysis of some important aspects of Chinese alchemical research and theory.

Acupuncture in bronchial asthma: bodyplethysmographic measurements of acute bronchospasmolytic effects.

D Berger, D Nolte

In 12 patients with bronchial asthma the effects of acupuncture (45 tests altogether) on airway resistance have been investigated. In 9 patients there was a significant decrease of airway resistance 10 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours after the end of acupuncture. The lowest level for airway resistance (70.1% of control value) was reached during the first hour after acupuncture. The possibility of a merely suggestive effect could be excluded, because "placebo-acupunctures" did not change airway resistance significantly. The comparison with a parasympatholytic acting drug as a metered aerosol (Atrovent) demonstrated that acupuncture had a somewhat weaker bronchospasmolytic effect. Three patients did not show any reaction after repeated acupunctures.

Effects of Fructus gardeniae extract on hepatic function.

This article discusses the effects of Fructus Gardeniae extract on hepatic function. Fructus Gardeniae extract manifested no hepatotoxic effects on rats, as shown by alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, and lactate dehydrogenase studies. Fructus Gardeniae extract failed to activate the UDP-glucuronyltransferase system; whereas in hyperbilirubinemic state the enzyme was activated, presumably by substrate induction. Fructus Gardeniae extract increased the activity of UDP-glucose dehydrogenase, which would result in an increase in availability of UDP-glucuronic acid intracellularly, BSP clearance study showed an unexpected impairment of hepatic uptake of the dye after extract treatment. The action mechanism involved in lowering of serum bilirubin level by Fructus Gardeniae extract may well be complex; it is probably acting on a locus other than glucuronyl transferase.

The use of low intensity electrical stimulation to the auricles in psychiatric patients.

C K Vitou, S E Vitou

The regulated passage of an intense convulsion producing electrical current through the brain as in Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) is an accepted modality of psychiatric therapy. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a brief cyclic electrical current to both auricles. The current was tolerable, nonconvulsive in nature and self-administered by the patients at home. The data indicates the procedure proved a very potent method for the control of mental depression, anxiety-depression and delusional states. In the majority of cases, it completely eliminated, for many months after treatment, the need for psychiatric or drug supportive therapy.
