Ear, nose and throat (ENT) presentations to primary care are common and frequently affect military patients. Many patients can be managed in primary care with appropriate treatment, but some presentations require appropriate, timely, and occasionally emergency onward referral for hospital management. This paper discusses the management of common otological presentations including otitis externa (OE), acute otitis media, chronic suppurative otitis media (including cholesteatoma), tympanic membrane (TM) perforations and pinna haematoma.

In 1981, the description of symptoms widespread among his messmates by a Leading Seaman admitted to hospital with pneumonia led to an epidemiological and clinical investigation on board HMS SHEFFIELD, a Type 42 destroyer. It was concluded that all the members of one mess deck were affected by humidifier fever. Simple advice which was given to CINCFLEET staff to keep air conditioning systems running during refits and prolonged maintenance periods is believed to have prevented a recurrence on other ships.

The Royal Navy’s Role 2 Afloat (R2A) capability has now been firmly established in support of United Kingdom (UK) troops on contingency operations such as humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations. This article reviews the current capability of R2A to deliver medical care to children and pregnant women, including the challenges facing the deployed Biomedical Scientist (BMS).

The Role 2 Afloat (R2A) capability is now firmly established on several maritime platforms using the 370 Module (afloat) equipment. This year has seen the appointment on board ships that support R2A of a new full-time role, the Medical Module Manager (MMM), who is responsible for the equipment on board. This article outlines the new role.

Abstract Following and during recent conflict, the UK Defence Medical Services (DMS) research programme has resulted in significant advancements in care. There are opportunities to work in medical research with the backing of either MOD funding and/or 3rd sector support. Research may require Ministry of Defence Research Ethics Committee (MODREC) approval, a process that can be daunting and confusing for those new to research. Often researchers have a finite period in which to complete their research; any delay in the process can be frustrating and may decrease the effectiveness of the research period. Here, we use recent experience to describe the development of a research idea and its submission through the MODREC process. We identify considerations and potential pitfalls in order to streamline and inform the process for those considering DMS research in the future.
