Mixed Methods in Nursing Research : An Overview and Practical Examples.
Ardith Z Doorenbos

Mixed methods research methodologies are increasingly applied in nursing research to strengthen the depth and breadth of understanding of nursing phenomena. This article describes the background and benefits of using mixed methods research methodologies, and provides two examples of nursing research that used mixed methods. Mixed methods research produces several benefits. The examples provided demonstrate specific benefits in the creation of a culturally congruent picture of chronic pain management for American Indians, and the determination of a way to assess cost for providing chronic pain care.

[Self-efficacy among health learners/self-efficacy among health educators].
Y Chikamoto

The Social Cognitive Theory has helped health educators develop effective health education programs that target self-efficacy among participants in changing their health behavior. Bandura has identified four resources on which individuals determine their levels of self-efficacy: (1) performance accomplishment, (2) vicarious reinforcement, (3) verbal persuasion, and (4) emotional arousal. Examples of health education strategies that utilize each of the four resources to increase participants' self-efficacy are described. Health education professionals in Japan have attempted to use programs based on the Social Cognitive Theory for Japanese populations. It is criticized that health educators that use such programs are not well trained in effective use, and that those programs have not been utilized at their maximum potentials. Using the frame-work of the Social Cognitive Theory, the importance of incorporating ways to increase self-efficacy of health educators in providing health education services into education and training of health educators is discussed.

[Search for the meaning of "yutori" for patients living with cancer].
Y Ito

With the arrival of successful treatment modalities for many types of cancer, the care of patients living with cancer has become an important. The purpose of this study was to provide insight into QOL and describe the meaning of "Yutori" of patients living with cancer. Subjects were 18 patients who lived with cancer and agreed to participate this study. The mean age was 54.2. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed using the technique of Making a Domain Analysis in The Ethnographic Interview by Spradley. For the cancer patients the significant meanings referred to a condition of being in an individual mind and life which was related to "peace of mind", satisfaction and happiness. The concept of "yutori" has twenty aspects. These aspects of "yutori" were categorized into three themes: "keeping my own self", preserving their "vital energy source", the joy of being alive. This study suggests that the experience of cancer patients were emerged positive aspects in their lives. In order to promote these positive aspects, nurses must respect the individual pace and values in the patients' lives, and understand the context of each individual's experience as a person living with cancer.

[A comparison of motivational intervention and knowledge-supplied intervention for weight control in female students living alone: focus on self-efficacy]. [
M Oka, T Munakata

The purpose of this study was: 1) to verify if motivational intervention enhances self-efficacy and desire for weight control; and 2) to compare the performance of weight control, desire, and self-efficacy among subjects in the motivational intervention group with those in the knowledge-supplied intervention group. Subjects included twenty-two female students living alone. The participants were divided into two groups of motivational-intervention (experimental group) and knowledge-supplied intervention (control group), consisting of eleven subjects in each group selected at random. A pre-test/post-test control design was used. Intervention in the experimental group consisted of a confirmation of individual reasons for weight control, connecting weight control with a life worth living for, and self-monitoring. Intervention in the control group however, involved instructions, on physiological and biochemical basis of proper weight control. As the result, these are suggested that the motivational intervention associated with enhancement of self-efficacy in weight control and dietary behavior. Compared to knowledge-based intervention, motivational intervention was associated with higher chewing method performance ratios, longer terms of continuing the chewing method, self-efficacy of weight control, self-efficacy of dietary behavior, and desire to weight control.
