The management of haemophilia, Christmas disease and von Willebrand's syndrome are reviewed. The principal advances in diagnosis are the measurement of procoagulant activity, the ristocetin cofactor and the levels of the protein associated with procoagulant activity by immunologic methods. The mainstay of treatment is replacement of the coagulation factors by partially or highly purified blood products.

111 episodes of acute urinary tract infection in children without urinary tract malformations were treated by trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, either during 3 days or during 7-10 days. Cure rate attained almost 100%. Recurrence rates of the first infection were similar after short treatment (29.6%) and after conventional treatment (30%). It is concluded that uncomplicated urinary tract infection in ambulatory practice may be treated safely and successfully by only 3 days of an appropriate antimicrobial.

Preventing injuries means using epidemiological knowledge of accidents. In order to increase this knowledge on accidents in childhood, field research is badly needed, in addition to other approaches. First, a comparison of the main characteristics of three of these approaches is presented. Second, the authors try to demonstrate why, in their opinion, the contribution of the practising pediatrician in this kind of applied research is to be considered as: (a) interesting for him; (b) fruitful in terms of data gathering and analysis, and (c) useful for all children and their family in terms of future, more specific preventive action. Some preliminary results of the data systematically collected by the members of GREPA illustrate this position taken by the authors.

Introducing the article, the author emphasizes the importance of preschool and school instruction of the hospitalized children. Although this education and instruction programme differs in many particularities from that in normal schools, it should adhere to the same principles regarding the content and organization of the educational process and promote collaboration between the teaching staff in regular schools and teachers in hospitals. "Play therapy' is only one of the aspects of this activity and it is our task as pediatricians to provide a satisfactory number of full-time preschool and school teachers on the ward. Good planning in this field is of utmost importance. Suitable facilities for playing and learning are necessary, as well as toys, books and other possibilities for handcraft skills. Appropriate staff rooms should be provided for the hospital teaching staff. Today, the idea of hospital education and instruction programme is accepted and teachers and preschool teachers already work in some pediatric hospitals. Our task is, however, that kindergarten and school find their place in each children's hospital. This should also be enacted by law.
