This pilot study compared crying patterns of twogroups of 4-week-old babies and their mother's zinc levels. Mothers were allocated to a zinc-supplemented group (one 25 mgm tablet daily) or non-zinc supplemented group. They were requested to chart their babies crying patterns at the beginning of their babies 4th week of birth. Twenty-nine mothers of seventy-five who were recruited for the pilot study returned their completed forms. Group Z (N=13) comprised mothers who were given a zinc supplement and Group NZ (N=16) consisted of those mothers not given a zinc supplement.

The unexpected death of healthy newborn infant in the post natal ward is a traumatic experience for everyone — the mother, father, family, the midwife and the health care team. It is often an event like this that will facilitate the development of, or review of policies to guide best practice. In this case there was no policy on breast feeding related co sleeping and when a departmental working group was established to develop such a policy, they turned to the literature to ascertain what the evidence was.
This paper is a summary of some of the literature reviewed and focuses on sudden infant death syndrome and breastfeeding in bed, cultural practices, bed sharing and smoking and forms of co sleeping. The end result is a policy that reflects the mothers' ability to make her own choice based on information and evidence.

The aim of this study was to provide a profile of the journal reading habits of midwives who are members of the Australian College of Midwives. There is no literature that could be found on this topic. A survey design research method was used and a questionnaire with 21 items was sent to a sample group of 281. The data was analysed using SPSS and the results are presented in four themes: demographic profile, extent of journal reading of members, satisfaction with the current ACMI Journal and the use of knoweldge from journal read to practice setting.
