Spontaneous correction of long face tendency--a case report.
Pub Date : 1994-09-01
Y Jefferson

Many studies have described long face syndrome as being caused by excessive lower facial height. No other literature, apparently, has described the possibility that this vertical imbalance may also be caused by the underdevelopment of the upper portion of the face. The unexpected and unplanned treatment result from this case report clearly shows the possibility that vertical imbalances can also be the result of short upper facial height. This finding may have clinical and physiological ramifications that need further studies.

The new simplified Sim-Gordon orthodontic analysis.
Pub Date : 1994-09-01
J M Sim, J A Gordon

The new Sim-Gordon Computerized Analysis is simple to use, basic in the orthodontic diagnostic values that need to be measured and entered, and serves as an extremely useful guide for the treatment planning of orthodontic patients. It will run on any IBM compatible computer, and uses less than 740 Kb of space on a disk. So far as is known, all insurance companies will accept it. It is a pleasure to announce the availability of this reasonable and cost-effective, simplified, IAO-accepted, professional orthodontic diagnostic system to our fellow practitioners. The authors would like to thank Dr. Duane Keller, Dr. Yosh Jefferson, Dr. Thomas Hughes, Dr. Rudy Postema, Dr. Michel Champagne, Dr. John Byland, Dr. Kenneth Lyle, and Dr. Janet Doerr for their helpful suggestions and aid in the selection of values to be measured.

A disclusion appliance to eliminate occlusally generated TMD symptoms prior to, and during, fixed orthodontic therapy.
Pub Date : 1994-09-01
S S Kimmel

Temporomandibular disorders are of multifactorial origin. If it is determined that the patient's occlusal scheme is a contributing factor to his/her TMD symptoms, it is accepted that reversible, noninvasive procedures be instituted at the outset of treatment. Splint therapy conforms to this guideline and serves to provide temporary, reversible alteration of the occlusal scheme in order to provide this relief. In a mutually protected occlusion, the posterior teeth accept the occlusal force of closure, while the anterior teeth serve to separate the dentition during excursive movements. The purpose of the disclusion splint described in this article is to eliminate muscle hypertonicity, along with its ensuing problems, by establishing a mutually protected occlusion via the guide planes created by the acrylic portions of the splint. Simultaneously, it does not compromise the patient's freeway space but acts as a preorthodontic, adjunctive-orthodontic, or post-TMD "stabilization-retentive" appliance because of its inherent ability to promote disarticulation of occluding dental surfaces during function.

Case report: twin supernumerary maxillary central incisors, unerupted maxillary central incisors. Early orthodontic treatment in ten-year-old child.
Pub Date : 1994-03-01
F B Glenn

This is the case report of a 10 year-old female Caucasian with a mixed dentition Class I right and Class II left side malocclusion and unerupted maxillary central incisors. It was necessary for the oral surgeon to remove twin supernumerary mesiodens prior to the placement of orthodontic appliances. Space was created to accommodate the customary, also unerupted central incisors, which were rotated 90 degrees to the midline.
