[A study of esthetic harmony and balance of the facial soft tissue].
N B Haralabakis, M Lagoudakis, E Spanoudakis

Esthetics and harmony of the human body have been for ages sources of research and inspiration for scientists and artists. The face affects the appearance and determines, in a way, the limits in the evaluation of beauty influenced by various psychological, environmental or other factors. There are some studies dealing with facial proportions in which researchers are trying to establish some mathematic norms for the evaluation of the "esthetic face". In this paper, a study of some facial proportions is carried out, in photographs of female faces with three different expressions, seriousness, relaxed position and smile. Our findings show that smiling faces are significantly different from serious and relaxed faces in most of the proportions studied. The "Golden proportion" was closer to the proportions of the serious and relaxed faces than to the proportions of the smiling ones.

[Segmented arch technique and incisor intrusion for deep overbite correction]. [
N Toutountzakis, D Mavreas

The mechanisms which will be selected for the correction of deep overbite depend exclusively on the choice of the clinician for: 1. Gennine anterior teeth intrusion. 2. Eruption of posterior teeth. 3. Combination of anterior intrusion and posterior extrusion. Principles of incisor intrusion have been presented as well as the use of intrusive springs in the segmented arch technique. Six principles must be considered in incisor intrusion: 1) the use of forces of optimal magnitude and constancy, 2) the use of a single point contact in the anterior region, 3) selection of the point of force application with respect to the center of resistance of the anterior segment, 4) selective intrusion based on anterior tooth geometry, 5) control over the reactive units and 6) inhibition of eruption of the posterior teeth and avoidance of undesirable eruptive mechanics.

[The ideal forces for canine retraction]. [
K Markostamos, K Akli

In this study we analyze the factors, which are able to determine the ideal forces for teeth movement and especially canine retraction. These factors are the following: 1. Way of movement. 2. Anatomical situation. 3. Biological situation. 4. Personal factors. 5. Duration of movement. 6. The force control. The analysis of the factors mentioned, proves that there is a variety of "ideal forces" for canine distal movement. Thus, the "ideal forces" differ, depending on: Whether the movement is bodily or tipping. Whether it is applied on cortical or spongy bone. Whether it is applied at early or elder ages. The length of the root. Whether the canine is drawn with or without friction. The orthodontist can approach the "ideal force", considering all the factors mentioned, thus, avoiding experimentation and their following complications.

[Tracing the postero-anterior radiograph].
E Markovitsi, S Kavadia, S Sidiropoulou

In this paper the essential knowledge for the overall tracing of the postero--anterior cephalometric radiographs has been discussed. Special attention has been paid to the structures of the facial skeleton and their radiographic description as well as to the methodology of an effective tracing. This knowledge could be very useful to a better study of the postero--anterior radiograph which helps to a complete diagnosis.

[Cephalometric standards of adult Greeks (Ricketts' ten factor analysis)].
S Kavadia, N Topouzelis, S Sidiropoulou, H Markovitsi, G Kolokythas

In this study the ten factors which compose the Ricketts' summary analysis were measured on 81 lateral skull radiographs of adult Greeks (41 males and 40 females) with normal occlusion and harmonious face to establish cephalometric standards. The mean value, standard deviation, standard error of the mean, minimum and maximum values as well as the range of each variable were found and discussed for each sex separately as well as for the whole sample. The main conclusion of the study is that adult Greeks with normal occlusion and harmonious face present: a tendency to the brachy facial vertical type, a small retroposition of the maxilla and of the lower lip and prominent and labialy proclined lower incisors.

[Diagnosis of the maxillary dentoskeletal discrepancies in the transverse plane of space].
N Toutountzakis, K Markostamos

The dentoskeletal discrepancies of the craniofacial complex in the transverse dimension which usually appear in combination with similar discrepancies in the antero-posterior and the vertical dimension or more ravely by themselves, are of the highest interest for the clinical orthodontist and increase the complexity of the diagnostic procedure in these cases. In this study emphasis in given in diagnostic evaluation of the cases with transverse maxillary discrepancies. Diagnostic criteria which must be taken under consideration both during clinical examination and during orthodontic model study are described and the most important cephalometric methods which can help the diagnosis in these cases are referred.

[Relationships between the incisors and the skeletal vertical type of the face]. [
N Topouzelis, S Kavadia, A Zafiriadis, S Sidiropoulou, H Markovitsi, G Kolokythas

The purpose of this cephalometric investigation is to find out the dental and dentofacial relationships of the incisors with the skeletal vertical type of the face. The material of this study consisted of 200 lateral skull radiographs of an equal number of adult Greeks with normal occlusion and harmonious face. Ten cephalometric variables were measured and statistically analysed. The statistical analysis has been made separately for males and females. The mean value, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values were calculated for each variable. The following three factorial analyse of correspondences leaded to the definition of the existent relationships between the anterior teeth and the vertical facial type.
