Veterinarians have a tremendous responsibility— and opportunity— to help their clients prepare for a potential foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak. While eradication of FMD, should it occur in the U.S., is the ultimate goal, the old approach to FMD response— massive depopulation— is no longer workable except in a small outbreak. The size, structure, efficiency and extensive movement in cattle production will likely require alternative response options to manage disease spread, such as vaccination and allowing animals to recover.

Sanitation of egg flats and pallets may be done by heating them up above 130 oF and maintaining the high temperature for a period of time (e.g., 6-8 h). To assess the heating performance of a newly built heat treatment room at a commercial layer farm in wintertime (December) in Iowa, temperature of room air and inside the stacked pallets and flats were monitored during the heating process. Preliminary results show that directing heat more toward the floor improved the room heating effect greatly; the room air and pallet stacks temperature reached the target zone (130-140oF) 30 min and 4 h after starting the heater, respectively. The temperature of flat stacks did not reach the target temperature zone due to larger volume and heat resistance as compared to the pallet stacks. Findings of this study provide basis to improve the design of the heat treatment system for disinfecting the egg flats and pallets for commercial laying hen farms.

The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University has experienced a tremendous increase in undergraduate enrollment in the past decade, yet the placement rate of graduates remains at almost 98%. While the industry continues to expand its demand for qualified graduates, this placement rate is not accomplished by chance or without a strategy. This strategy is put into place during the prospective student visit which often occurs during the student’s junior or senior year of high school, and continues throughout their career at Iowa State University.

The inbred chicken lines Fayoumi and Leghorn have been shown to be relatively resistant and susceptible, respectively, to Newcastle disease virus (NDV). In this experiment we detected higher gene expression levels of MHC-like class I Y (MHCIY) in the Fayoumi trachea, lung, and Harderian gland of NDV challenged and nonchallenged birds across multiple time points. MHC region is important to the immune system and is often associated with resistance to pathogens. This gene may be associated with the Fayoumis’ resistant phenotype.
