The stria vascularis after ultrasonic irradiation. 超声照射后血管纹。

The cochleae of 51 guinea pigs were exposed to focused ultrasound of 1.25 megacycles. The ultrasonic probe, with a tip area of 1.8 mm2 was gently positioned against the otic capsule at the third coil from the base for 3 minutes at an intensity of 20 W/cm2. The only variable factor in this study was the survival time which was selectively set between 12 hours and 2 months. The stria vascularis was stained by the peroxidase-benzidine method. Circumscribed lesions of rather uniform character were found. The acute changes consisted of vascular constriction, thrombus formation, disruption and extravasation of blood. After survival times of one and two months, all vessels within a small segment of the spiral ligament and the stria vascularis had disappeared. No definite signs of revascularization of the target area were observed. Most of the pigment granules of the stria vascularis were dissolved within the treated zone. The effects of focused ultrasound and argon laser irradiation upon the vessels in the lateral wall of the cochlear duct have been compared.

Body sway induced by a low frequency alternating current. 由低频交流电引起的身体摇摆。

A sine wave current stimulus, applied between electrodes placed about one ear and an indifferent electrode, produced a cyclical sway predominantly in the coronal plane. In 12 normal subjects, stimulus frequency (0.1-0.6 Hz) and intensity (+/-0.05 - +/-1.5 mA) had no significant effect on the amplitude of the postural response, but phase lag increased from 0.7 rad at 0.1 Hz to 3.8 rad at 0.6 Hz. Stimulation at 0.3 Hz, +/-1.0 mA evoked detectable responses in all but one of 50 normal subjects. Seven patients with end organ lesions all gave positive responses with the same test procedure. Likewise 13 out of 16 patients with destruction of the VIII nerve also gave positive responses. In the other 3 patients the response on the side of the lesion was absent, as it was in another 3 individuals with lesions of the vestibular nuclei. It was concluded that the sway induced by a low frequency alternating current is the manifestation of the stimulation of structures within the CNS central to the vestibular nerve or its end organ.

Experiments on fluid movements through the labyrinthine membranous walls. 流体在迷宫式膜壁中的运动实验。

Methods were selected and tested for studying the flux of water through the labyrinthine walls. Mannitol which does not pass through the walls was used in isotonic concentration in the endolymphatic space, and various concentrations of mannitol solutions in the perilymph space created a concentration gradient which resulted in a flux of water through the membranous wall. This is a first step in investigating the flux of solutes and solvent through these walls of the labyrinth as a basis for studying substances which chronically increase the colloid osmotic pressure due to their difficulty in passing the walls.

Claims are often made that the electronystagmographic recording of induced nystagmic responses either with eye closure or in darkness enhances the sensitivity of the test. While this may be true of certain parameters it is not true of all and may in fact lead to a reduction in the diagnostic information obtainable with optic fixation upon a target.
