An exploratory study of sexual assertiveness and characteristics of African American women in negotiating condom use at an HBCU.

The transmission of HIV/AIDS among African American women through heterosexual sex is an epidemic. Critical themes extracted from the HIV/AIDS sexual assertiveness literature revealed that: (a) sexual assertiveness is related to HIV risk, (b) sexual assertiveness is related to communication, and (c) women with low sexual assertiveness are at risk for HIV. This descriptive study sought to answer the following research question: What do young adult college attending African American women self-report about asking information about their partner's sexual history? The multifaceted model of HIV risk is the theoretical framework which guided this descriptive study. A basic tenet of the multifaceted model of HIV risk is that there is no single predictor of women's HIV risk behavior. Results revealed that 104 young adult college attending African American women who volunteered to attend a one day HIV prevention training overall scored high on a Sexual Assertive Scale on subscales of Information Communication, Refusal, and Pregnancy/STD Prevention Subscale, and scored in the medium range on the Initiation Subscales. The Information Communication and Pregnancy/ STD Prevention Subscale received the highest scores. More research is needed targeting diverse African American females with different socioeconomic status, various locations, and educated to determine their sexual assertiveness with partners which are essential in developing specific programs for diverse groups of African American females.

Cultural safety assessment of an urban Canadian hospital.
Pub Date : 2013-01-01
Balbir Kaur Gurm, Jas Cheema

Canada continues to grow as a multicultural country but the number of people employed in healthcare does not reflect the increasing population diversity. In addition there are no set Canadian standards in providing Culturally Safe health services. Hence, there may be a lack of safe cultural practices when communicating with patients and/or colleagues. The purpose of this survey study was to determine if there is inconsistency between the written and practiced policy on cultural safety in an urban hospital on the west coast of British Columbia. The study examined whether there were any discriminatory practices based on diversity as judged by the recipients of the interactions, patients and staff. The results indicate that discrimination and equality barriers do exist within the hospital even though Canada has equity legislation. The hospital needs to adopt policy changes in practice and establish bench marks to create a more culturally safe environment through programs and services that meet the diverse needs of staff and patients.

The invisible minority: revisiting the debate on foreign-accented speakers and upward mobility in the workplace.
Pub Date : 2013-01-01
Soji Akomolafe

Of some of the major types of discrimination, the one that gets the least attention is national origin discrimination and in particular, accent discrimination, especially when it comes to upward mobility in the workplace. Yet, unlike other forms of discrimination, accent discrimination is rarely a subject of any robust public debate. This paper is a modest attempt to help establish a framework for understanding the relative neglect to which the discourse on accent discrimination has been subjected vis-a-vis the overall national debate on diversity. Hopefully, in the process, it will stimulate a more robust conversation on the plight of foreign-accented speakers.

Sexual communication needs of African American families in relation to faith-based HIV prevention.
Pub Date : 2013-01-01
Judith Bacchus Cornelius, Ann C White

In this study, we examined the sexual communication needs of African-American parents and their adolescent children in relation to faith-based HIV prevention. Eight focus groups of 10 members each were conducted, four with parents and four with adolescents. The sessions were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Findings indicated that some African Americans are not knowledgeable about sexually transmitted infections. The sample members were not in agreement about when sexual communications should begin, yet the majority felt that the church was the best place to have these discussions. Healthcare professionals can use the findings from this study to assist faith-based organizations to strengthen the sexual communication skills of African-American families.

International study tours: an avenue for personal growth.
Pub Date : 2013-01-01
Frances L O'Reilly, William McCaw, John J Matt, Patty Kero

This article consists of four integral parts of a complex process leading to successful implementation of international study tours. Our role as faculty members, in the development of these study tours, began with the proactive, reflective practice of examining our cultural experiences, perceptions, and understandings of our cultural knowledge, dispositions, and skills. Through these tours, educators from other countries and cultures come to The University of Montana and experience a collaboration of ideas and acquire a better understanding of education in the United States. To be successful these study tours need to go beyond content and include a variety of less tangible aspects ranging from the Initial Request for Proposals to the culminating activities. These study tours have led to the empowerment of educational leaders becoming instruments of positive change in their homeland. In turn, the relationships developed have transformed the faculty presenters and the institution in ways that are both measurable and immeasurable. Human relationships based on mutual respect and dignity underlie the success of educational tours.

Scholarship and diversity in higher education.
Pub Date : 2013-01-01
David O Akombo

Colleges and universities which are less diverse in their communities are often characterized by values, behavior patterns, and linguistic traits impinging on the institutions' milieu. These traits differ in significant ways from those within the dominant society for which the institution is established. The diverse students, and faculty alike, find these policies to be quasi-exclusive and limited to the geographical and demo- graphical environments in which the institutions are located. This paper examines some of these traits that affect the experience in higher education for both students and faculty from minority groups.
