The European Working Time Directive and the change to shift working have highlighted the need for a high level of continuity of patient care. Continuity of information, through a competent and professional handover allows doctors to be not only made aware of the issues important to each patient's care, but also allows a knowledge-based approach to that patient's management.

It is estimated that almost 1 in 10 men will suffer a fracture caused by osteoporosis after the age of 50 years. Among those are a considerable number of men who will fracture their hip. A number of therapies have demonstrated efficacy in improving bone density in men, and the issue of which therapy and when to institute it is addressed in this article.

The cervical spine is a relatively fragile structure traversed by the spinal cord. Injuries to the cervical spine (c-spine) are therefore associated with potentially catastrophic neurological complications. This article illustrates the importance of routine c-spine immobilization in all trauma patients and highlights how early diagnosis of injuries can optimize outcome.

Bisphosphonates already have an established role in the management of the skeletal complications of metastatic bone disease. The development of new, highly potent compounds has led to investigation into their use as preventive agents in the adjuvant setting. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the evidence for their use in prevention and treatment.
