These working notes were prepared by a manufacturer of sluiceroom and medical equipment in an effort to provide an unbiased comparison between disposable and re-usable systems for human waste disposal. Blank spaces which will be found within the tables and graphs are for the insertion of your own specific local data. Thus, it is hoped that individuals will find these notes to be specifically relevant to them.

The introduction of new, ventilated specimen tables at Preston Hall Hospital, Maidstone, which meet all the requirements of the Health and Safety Inspectorate, has solved long-standing problems presented by formaldehyde and solvent fumes.

This article describes a unique, self-initiated scheme for the installation of a new boiler at Chorley and District Hospital fueled by waste. The system described is applicable to smaller sites and, since it answers many of the traditional incineration/heat recovery problems, the principle employed is relevant for all sizes of plant. Several Regional Health Authorities have already visited the site and shown a high degree of interest in this pilot project, Terry Finch, the Works Officer, previously worked for Preston Health Authority. He won the Institute of Hospital Engineering's Energy Conservation Competition in 1980. Chris Lowe has worked in hospitals in Chorley for over twelve years and has contributed to many innovative projects throughout that time.

The author is the Energy Conservation Officer for the Haringey Health Authority. The North Middlesex Hospital is an acute unit with approximately 700 beds. Currently, twenty-one outstations control the maternity/radio therapy tower complex plus the outpatients' department. Plans have been approved to extend the system and Phase 2 will cover pathology, administration, medical and surgical blocks together with x-ray and casualty blocks. Transmitton Ltd, as in Phase 1, will supply the hardware and contract management.
