Coping: Implications for health practitioners 应对:对卫生从业人员的启示

Because coping plays an important role in sustaining individuals' overall functioning in illness, professionals need to become more skilled in maximizing its potential. The practitioner who takes the responsibility for assessing and strengthening clients' coping skills can lessen the negative impact of the illness. Although present theory on coping provides only initial guidance for this endeavor, a number of useful models and tools are available to study the coping process. Their introduction into clinical practice is strongly recommended.

Sexual counselling of diabetic impotence 糖尿病性阳痿的性咨询

A study of 54 diabetic men was conducted to determine the incidence of impotence, the nature of the sexual counselling they received, and their referral routes. health providers associated with diabetes care also were interviewed to determine how they perceived professional responsibility for counselling about sexual dysfunctions in their clients.

In the diabetic men studied, 48.1% had experienced primary impotence and 16.7% secondary impotence. Only 11.5% of the diabetic men received any sexual counselling, which each had initiated because of their personal concerns. Generally neither information about sexual dysfunctions nor even anticipatory warnings were given by members of the care-giving team.

A discussion of impotence including etiology for the diabetic patient and sexual therapy as it relates to patient counselling is explored. Inclusion of this type of counselling for the male diabetic can contribute to continuity of care.

Design considerations for adult patient education 成人患者教育的设计考虑

A variety of factors require attention in the design of patient education programs for adults. Andragogy, the art and science of helping adults learn, describes certain conditions of learning that are more conducive to growth and development for adults and prescribes practices in the learning-teaching transaction to meet them. Stigma, a special discrepancy between virtual and actual social identity, reduces a patient's self-esteem and fosters a feeling of dependence on others for care. Anxiety related to diagnosis and illness creates a situation in which patients cannot productively learn. The stages in acceptance of diagnosis provide a roadmap for understanding a patient's feelings/psychological processes and insight into opportunities to intervene with patient education. The specific disease a patient has effects his ability to learn. Each of these factors is considered with implications described for designing and implementing patient education activities for adults.
