This study surveyed current education majors (n=70) in two Kansas universities to gain a perspective on their understanding of Information Literacy (IL) concepts and skills, and to learn whether they anticipated teaching such concepts to their future K-12 students. School media specialists in the state were also surveyed (n=85) and asked to share their observations of teachers new to the profession as to their understanding and practice of IL. Results indicate many education students were not familiar with IL concept terminology and at least some new teachers in the state do not have a clear understanding or priority for teaching such skills in K-12 classrooms.

Conserving for the Future by Archiving Our Past; A Story about Technology and Digitization Informed by a Vintage Paperback Book Collection.

The books, photographs, letters and other ephemera of our past are for the first time becoming completely transformed into the digital bits and bytes of our computer-generated present. What happens to these products as they shift from the corporeal to the technological world? What essence might be lost when a book is scanned into a computer or is part of the Google Book Library Project, and what might be gained? Or is it all energy simply transferred to another medium like when wood is burned in a fireplace turns into to heat energy? This extended article explores these questions using a collection of vintage magazines and paperback books, which provide a lighthearted timbre to a somewhat esoteric subject. Navigating this Information The goal of this article is to look at what occurs in the process of transforming products from an analog format (actual items like books) to a digital one (scanned graphics). This is not a how-to guide to scanning or developing databases, however, it is a discussion of the considerations around archiving and digitization as they are utilized today. It is important to know what is gained and lost as products change from one form to another, and how to make the best of that process. To illustrate these concepts, the article includes graphics from a collection of vintage magazines and paperbacks, which provides a sense of what happens to an actual group of historical items going through this process, and what choices conservators have along the way. This includes some of the issues around scanning, digital cameras, and airbrushing and how these relate to authenticating documents on the internet. This collection will be used to specifically discuss conservation and what happens to collections that are online in one format versus another. A little background and history on vintage materials is

Featuring Historical Textbooks to Build Knowledge of University History

Undergraduate students at a teacher education institution, the University of Northern Colorado, are the target audience for an exhibit of a reading series from the Libraries’ Archival Services collections. The display highlights an important era in the university’s history involving four faculty members: Paul McKee, M. Lucile Harrison, Annie McCowen, and Elizabeth Lehr. These professors developed an innovative approach to early reading instruction that was incorporated into their reading textbook series during a time of uniformity in reading textbooks. The rationale for the display was based on research about the Reading for Meaning series discussed in this article.

21st Century Workforce Initiatives: Implications for Information Literacy Instruction in Academic Libraries 21
Pub Date : 2017-09-19 DOI: 10.26443/EL.V34I2.307
Laura L. Leavitt
The discussion that follows is designed to expose the reader to a selection of educational reform initiatives that fall under the “21st Century Workforce” umbrella. The aims of these initiatives are quite harmonious with the overarching goals of librarianship and the opportunities for librarians to become involved and to demonstrate leadership in this arena are plentiful. The author’s efforts to incorporate information literacy principles and to encourage critical thinking in a graduate level organizational behavior class – in light of these initiatives and in response to employer feedback – are also discussed. It is hoped that the following information will inspire librarians to explore the initiatives further and to re-examine current information literacy and instruction efforts within this larger framework.

Beyond a Fad: Why Video Games Should Be Part of 21st Century Libraries

We believe video games have a place in libraries. We start by describing two provocative video games. Next, we offer a framework for the general mission of libraries, including access, motivation, and guidance. As a medium, video games have some distinguishing traits: they are visual, interactive, and based on simulations. We explain how these traits require and reward some traditional and new literacies. Furthermore, people play video games for at least three reasons: immersion, challenge, and connection. Finally, we offer guidelines and examples for how librarians can integrate video games into library collections and programming.

Information Literacy and the Workforce: A Review.
Pub Date : 2017-09-19 DOI: 10.26443/EL.V34I2.306
Sharon A. Weiner
This paper is a review of reports on information literacy and the workforce. There is a substantial body of literature on information literacy in K-16 educational settings, but there is much less literature on implications for the workplace and job-related lifelong learning. The topical categories of the reports are: the importance of information literacy for the workforce; how information literacy differs in work and educational settings; and barriers to information literacy in the workplace. The paper concludes with recommendations for practice and for further research.
