in English Starting in 1942, a hand-picked group of scholars in the US researched developments the guidance of developed psychoanalytical and group dynamic concepts in an attempt to explain the psychological and pedagogical origins of National Socialism, while at the same time trying to establish solutions for a future, peaceful Europe. Bearing in mind such premises, this contribution attempts to: a) establish the part which generational models of the interbel-lum years played for the subsequent rise of National Socialism; b) discover the practical consequences of politics defined by social sciences; c) identify the mental and institutional principles of social sciences as far as they affected education and culture during the reconstruction in the post-war years; d) ascertain whether the specific experience of escape, expulsion, emigration, as well as the confrontation with US society, generated a scholarly profile among emigrants apart from and beyond European traditions.

Purpose: Brain death/death by neurologic criteria (BD/DNC) may be determined in many countries by a clinical examination that shows coma, brainstem areflexia, and apnea, provided the conditions causing reversible loss of brain function are excluded a priori. To date, accounts of recovery from BD/DNC in adults have been limited to noncompliance with guidelines.

Clinical features: We report the case of a 72-yr-old man with a combined primary infratentorial (hemorrhagic) and secondary global (anoxic) brain lesion in whom decompressive craniectomy of the posterior fossa and six-hour therapeutic hypothermia (33-34°C) followed by 8-hour rewarming to ≥ 36°C were conducted. Thirteen hours later, clinical findings of brain function loss were documented in addition to guideline-compliant exclusion of reversible causes (arterial hypotension, intoxication, depressant drug effects, relevant metabolic or endocrine disequilibrium, chronic hypercapnia, neuromuscular disorders, and administration of a muscle relaxant). Since a primary infratentorial brain lesion was present, German guidelines required further ancillary testing. Doppler ultrasonography revealed some preserved cerebral circulation, and BD/DNC was not diagnosed. Approximately 24 hr after rewarming to ≥ 36°C, the patient exhibited respiratory efforts. He continued with assisted respiration until final asystole/apnea, without regaining additional brain function other than mild signs of hemispasticity. Follow-up computed tomography showed partial herniation of the cerebellum through the craniectomy gap of the posterior fossa, alleviating caudal brain stem compression.

Conclusions: Therapeutic decompressive craniectomy of the posterior fossa may allow for delayed reversal of apnea. In these patients, proof of cerebral circulatory arrest should be mandatory for diagnosing BD/DNC.

This is one of two articles on J.L. Tellkampf, a legal scholar who already in 1841 in an important series of articles in the America Jurist pointed the way to a modern American legal system as one where codifying and systematizing would lead common law.Supported by Justice Joseph Story, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and famous naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, he was a professor at Columbia College and at Union College. His research into prison discipline paralleled that of Alexis de Tocqueville. He was a founder of what is now the Correctional Association of New York. Francis Lieber found him a rival. In New York Tellkampf worked with “Young Americans” such as the codifiers of the New York Revised Statutes and David Dudley Field. He knew the poet Poe and other lead Young Americans. He supported reform and criticized past practice. Before coming to the U.S. in 1838, Tellkampf was a young supporter of modern constitutionalism in Germany and a colleague of the Brothers Grimm at the University of Gottingen. Upon his return to Germany he was a member of the Frankfurt Parliament of 1848 and of its all important constitutional committee and an advocate of American practices. The article “J.L. Tellkampf: German Legal Scientist in the U.S. 1838-1847 in an Age of Reform” is about Tellkampf’s life in the United States and the mixed reception he received here in his pursuit of legal scholarship. The article “The First Humboldtian Research Trip into the Polis: J.L. Tellkampf in the United States 1838-1847”: is about his research into legal methods, codification, currency backing and prison discipline.

Follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (FL) is a nodal B lymphoid malignancy that originates from the germinal center of a lymph node. FL is the second most frequent lymphoma subtype. The course of the disease is usually characterised by a typically indolent clinical course, with a median survival rate of 8-10 years, although most patients relapse after treatment. Diagnosis should always be based on a surgical specimen like an excisional node lymph biopsy. The first-line treatment of FL will depend of extension disease, tumour burden, patient symptoms, performance status and also patient decision. The addition of rituximab to conventional chemotherapy has improved ORR, PFS and OS. As first line in patients that need treatment, a combination of chemotherapy with rituximab induction followed by 2 years of rituximab maintenance is the best option. High-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem-cell transplantation in first line has not shown improvement and is not recommended as first-line therapy. Before any treatment decision in relapsed patients, a repeat biopsy is mandatory to rule out a transformation into large cell aggressive lymphoma. Standard treatment is controversial, depends on the efficacy of prior treatment, duration of the time-to-relapse, patient's age and histological findings at relapse.
