This lecture deals with the following members of the UN family: affiliated bodies, institutes and specialized agencies. It includes some valuable suggestions for obtaining the often hard-to-get literature produced by these organizations. In addition to a discussion of the main reference sources for UN material, there is an extensive listing of statistical materials produced by the UN in various subject areas. The last section describes the major legal reference works generated by the UN system.

This article briefly discusses the historical development of the CIA and President Carter's reorganization of the intelligence community in 1978. The authors describe the organizational structure of the CIA, and the duties, responsibilities and activities of its major offices. In addition to examining the past relationship of the CIA to the publishing activities of the Foreign Broadcast Information Service and the Joint Publications Research Service, the article reviews the difficulties of identifying CIA documents. An extensive bibliography of CIA publications is included.

In an effort to manage increasing workloads caused by the volume of government publications, changes in cataloging practice, automation of Library files and limitations of Department staff, the Government Documents Department of the General Library, University of California, Berkeley, recently underwent an administrative reorganization. The traditional area arrangement under which staff were assigned to handle either U.S., state, foreign or international documents has been replaced by an arrangement by function. Separate units now handle acquisition and monograph processing, serials processing, and public service/catalog maintenance. Procedures have been standardized and bibliographic control of documents has been increased; however, the implications of these changes for reference service and staff job satisfaction are still problems.

The purpose of this article is to identify the libraries in the United States with collections of Canadian materials, the extent of the collections and some of the problems encountered in collecting Canadian publications. Questionnaires were sent to 49 selective and full depositories of Canadian federal documents and 306 depositories of United States federal documents, drawn from theList of Depository Libraries by random sample. It was found that those libraries not already designated as Canadian federal depositories in the United States for the most part either do not collect Canadian materials at all or have very limited collections. A directory of the Canadian depository libraries is included.

In selecting Canadian publications, one person usually handles the federal documents while other publications are primarily selected by subject area. Thus it is understandable that upon receiving Canadian publications libraries primarily class some documents by catalogue number and integrate others into the library's main collection.

Bibliographic control has improved greatly since 1927 with many changes in the public printing law and concerted attempts by concerned librarians and the Canadian Library Association.

This lecture outlines the structure and functions of the main organs of the United Nations and describes their documentation, emphasizing how the documentation flows from the operations of the organs. In addition to a detailed description of the official records, the author explains how to read and compose document symbols. She also discusses the use of the primary indexes to UN materials, particularly UNDEX, and Indexes to Proceedings and the Indexes to Resolutions.

This citation study analyzes the use of international, U.S., and foreign documents in the journal International Organization from 1972–1976. The study examines how the three kinds of documents are used and the relationships between the kinds of documents.
