"This study investigated migrations from eastern to western Germany. Using a sequential decision model we first examined which persons expressed the intention of wanting to move from eastern to western Germany. Then, using unobserved heterogeneity controls we determined at the same time which persons of those willing to move actually did so later.... Once the intention to move has been declared...those who are well-qualified, short-time workers and persons who feel threatened by unemployment as well as persons with relatives in western Germany more often than average do in fact realise this intention. Commuters also have a very high rate of realisation." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND FRE AND RUS)

"Using model calculations to the year 2050, this paper shows the decisive role that assumptions on future (net) migration to Germany will play in the long-term development of the labor force potential. The particular focus of this paper is to point out the importance of (net) migration not only in terms of absolute figures, but more importantly in terms of the age and gender structure. The annual net migration of 500,000 or 250,000 persons leads, depending on the assumption of its age structure, to extreme differences in the long-term development of the labor force potential." "The aim of this paper is to provide a survey of the previous and possible future global effects of net immigration on economic growth and the labor market from a macroeconomic point of view....First, some fundamentals relating to the expected economic effects of migration are briefly examined. There follows--in the first main section--a retrospective view of the development of economy and immigration in...[Germany] based on a statistical comparison and existing simulations with macroeconomic models. The author analyzes the cross-border movement of labor migrants in Germany. The impact of increased integration among European Community countries is considered, and the pressure of migration from neighboring Eastern European countries is discussed. "Employment of workers from border regions [provides the] possibility of meeting the labour demand in the region, of alleviating the pressure to migrate by legalizing inflows and of balancing the interests of employers and cross-border workers, thus avoiding some of the negative side-effects or social costs of traditional labour migration."
