Background: Psychosocial factors, identified in pre-bariatric surgery evaluation, may affect surgical outcomes, as well as defer surgery, making it important to identify psychosocial predictors of surgery outcomes.

Methods: Baseline depressive and social anxiety symptom scores were analyzed as predictors of post-surgical weight loss (WL) and quality of life (QOL) following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and adjustable gastric banding (AGB). Eighty-nine (82F, 7M) participants underwent surgery and completed depression, anxiety and QOL questionnaires 3-weeks pre-surgery and 1-year post-surgery.

Results: Depressive scores and QOL scores improved post-surgery (P < 0.001), whereas social anxiety scores did not (P = 0.20). Baseline depressive (P = 0.90) and social anxiety (P = 0.20) scores did not predict % weight loss (WL) at 1 year, but higher baseline depressive (P = 0.04) and social anxiety (P = 0.005) scores predicted lower post-surgical QOL at 1 year. RYGB showed greater improvement in %WL (P < 0.001) than AGB, but no difference between the groups in QOL (P = 0.10). Improvement in QOL correlated with %WL (P < 0.001), whereas improvement in depressive scores did not correlate with %WL (P = 0.70) but did correlate with improvement in QOL (P = 0.01).

Conclusions: Baseline depressive and social anxiety scores predicted QOL but not %WL. Depressive and QOL scores improved post-surgery, but social anxiety scores did not. The findings suggest that patients who present with depressive or social anxiety symptoms pre-surgery perhaps should not be deferred; however, more studies are needed to confirm this. Patients with pre-operative social anxiety symptoms may benefit from counseling.

Diabetes, obesity, hyperlipidaemia, as well as cardiovascular diseases in general, have become an increasing social and economic problem in developed countries. Hops contain Xanthohumol (XN), a chalcone within a group of prenylated phenols. Used alone, it has recently shown promising results in the management of these individual conditions and we have therefore undertaken a review and assessed the evidence for XN as a food supplement in this setting.

Results: Total 300 patients were divided into asymptomatic patients (OSA-A, n = 89), symptomatic OSA (OSA-S, n = 164), and OSA on CPAP treatment (OSA-T, n = 47) groups. At the end of 16 weeks, the absolute weight loss of the OSA-T group was significantly greater than that of the OSA-S and OSA-A groups (-12.1 ± 5.9 vs. -9.5 ± 5.5 vs. -8.7 ± 5.3 kg, P < 0.01). A correlation of CPAP treatment to the absolute weight loss (Spearman’s correlation coefficient -0.181, P = 0.013) was established after adjustment of body weight, age and gender.

Double Jeopardy: Preponderance of Impaired Glucose Homeostasis and Overweight/Obesity Among Adult Females in Ikwo, Ebonyi State

The nutrition transition being faced by most economically developing countries has resulted in changes in chronic diseases patterns in such countries, yet such diseases are rarely studied in rural areas, where the majority of the population live. The prevalence of diabetes/impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and overweight/obesity was therefore studied in a population of adults in Ikwo LGA, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Standard internationally accepted methods were used for this cross-sectional population study. A total of 720 subjects (53.1% females) were recruited and studied. Diabetes was found in 4.0% of the subjects (3.0% for males and 5.0% for females) while 7.1% of the population (6.5% for males and 7.6% for females) had IFG. About 20% of the entire population (and a quarter of the females) were overweight/obese yet, 11.7% of them (10.7% males, 12.6% females) were underweight. The modal age range for those who were diabetic or overweight/obese was 26-40 years irrespective of sex. Blood glucose concentration was found to be significantly correlated only with BMI (r = +0.116; P < 0.01). The preponderance of both diabetes/IFG and overweight/obesity in women as seen in this study is indeed a double jeopardy, requiring urgent interventions.

Introduction: Low carbohydrate (CH) diets have been used in the management of obesity-related T2DM, with modest results. “Classic” ketogenic diets (KD) used in epilepsy are very low CH (10-20 g/day), very high fat (87-90% of calories) diets. We report a pilot study of treatment of obesity-related T2DM with “classic” 3:1 [fat]:[carbohydrate + protein] weight ratio diet using the novel approach of a complete ready-made meal replacement program.
