Abstract:Numerous studies have explored why medical patients sometimes do and sometimes do not follow their doctors' directions, whether this relates to taking prescribed medications, maintaining dietary changes, or following through with recommended therapy exercises. After exploring this literature, it is clear there are several approaches that could be implemented in the singing voice studio in order to help students follow through with their vocal practice schedules. Specifically, useful strategies could be developed by understanding the concepts of locus of control, self-efficacy, social support, and demeanor.

Abstract:Vocal fold masses are common, and singing teachers should be familiar with their nature and implications. This article reviews common abnormalities that occur on the vocal folds including nodules, cysts, polyps, scar, vascular abnormalities, granulomas and other pathology. Each requires different management. Guidance is given so that singing teachers understand the nature of different vocal fold masses and basic treatment guidelines. This will help them advise their students as to whether treatment recommendations seem reasonable.

Abstract:The American composer, Paul Nordoff, set 37 of E.E. Cummings poems to music. Fourteen of these he recorded himself, as both singer and pianist, twelve as a private 1961 Christmas greeting to a close colleague, and two more in 1972. This article explores those recordings in some detail. Audio files accompany the article, available on the NATS Multimedia website, along with modern studio recordings of ten of the songs.

Abstract:Moving into a new year we might gain new insights and understandings about the NATS Vision, Mission, Values, and Diversity & Inclusion Statement by looking at them in a new way. An exercise of distilling stories, ideals, careers, and lives into six short words can be applied to NATS's ideals and our plan for the year ahead. Bing Crosby wrote: "I'll keep singing 'til I die" and Beverly Sills said "No shortcuts to places worth going." My inspiration for 2023 is "Committed to NATS. Serving with Passion." What is yours?

Abstract:This article provides an overview of how trauma can impact the individuals that we work with, and offers strategies for creating a supportive environment within the context of voice care. Trauma-informed voice professionals aim to cultivate a supportive presence that has the ability to mindfully and imperfectly navigate both comfort and discomfort. We can begin this process by noticing our own physical and emotional sensations, and engaging in co-regulation (or co-harmony)—establishing compassionate, non-judgmental reciprocal connections. By acknowledging how trauma and chronic stress can manifest our bodies, we learn to hold more informed spaces for individuals to communicate with more ease, creativity, and authenticity.

Abstract:The larynx as a sound source appears to be adaptable to highly variable acoustic requirements that have been imposed on human vocal communication. The adaptation from long-distance outdoor calling to short-distance speech was followed by adaptation to electronic enhancement. Current trends are toward multi-phonic vocalizations that require adaptations along the entire airway.
