Selectivity of gillnets on the main fish species caught in the floodplains of the Madeira River (Rondônia, Brazil) 刺网对在马德拉河(巴西朗多尼亚)洪泛区捕获的主要鱼类的选择性

Small-scale fishing in the floodplains of the Amazon basin has intensified, with gillnets being one of the main types of tackle used. In this study, we evaluated the length structure of fish species in a floodplain lake of the Madeira River basin, emphasizing the selectivity of the nets in the main species caught. The fisheries were collected in periods of high water and low water, with nets of mesh sizes of 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 and 160 mm. Tests between the periods and also comparing the meshes were performed and the parameters of the selectivity curves estimated with the SELECT calculation code. Records of 17 new maximum lengths are presented. Of the 12 most abundant species, the selectivity of the nets in the modal lengths for Anchovia surinamensis were 13.3, 19.9, 26.6 and 33.2 cm in the nets with mesh sizes of 40, 60, 80 and 100 mm, respectively. In the three smallest mesh sizes, the values for Potamorhina altamazonica were 12.7, 19.0 and 25.3 cm and for Pellona flavipinnis values were 15.4, 23.2 and 30.9 cm. In the two smallest mesh sizes, the following values were presented for the species Potamorhina latior (12.9 and 19.4 cm), Potamorhina rutiloides (11.3 and 16.9 cm), Triportheus elongatus (19.7 and 29.5 cm), Triportheus flavus (14.1 and 21.1 cm) and Pimelodus blochii (15.5 and 23.0 cm). The estimates of selectivity of the nets, in addition to being basic information for fishery sciences, are also fundamental for the management of Amazonian fish stocks.

Meta-analysis of 87Sr/86Sr ratios in otoliths to establish thresholds for determining fish movement 对耳石中的 87Sr/86Sr 比率进行元分析,以确定鱼类移动的阈值

Unpublished data were combined with a literature review to test a hypothesis of whether there is a pattern for classifying fish as “movers” or “residents” according to variability in strontium isotope ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) ratios in otoliths as a function of its environmental fingerprint. The variability in Sr ratios found in the otoliths of fish specimens as a percentage of isotopic environmental variability was used to determine the intensity of movement in a given study area (POEVSri index). A classic meta-analysis and a frequentist regression were applied to obtain a logistic model to describe the pattern. The meta-analysis returned a POEVSri limit of 28.95% for sedentary individuals and the logistic model shows a high probability of movement for POEVSri indices over 32%. There is a gradient of movement probabilities in the POEVSri interval from 8 to 32%, with each class having equal odds when POEVSri is approximately 20%. Regarding applicability for future studies, if aspects such as sufficient spatial and seasonal water sampling are addressed, the model provides two different thresholds for fish: a priori “movers” are those with POEVSri ≥ 32%, and resident fish have POEVSri ≤ 8%.

The study aimed to determine the fatty acids profile, omegas, and lipid quality in loin in different weight classes of pirarucu (Arapaima gigas). A total of six pirarucu loin samples were used and sent to the laboratory by weight class, 1 (< 8 kg), 2 (8.1 to 11 kg), 3 (11.1 to 14 kg), 4 (14.1 to 18 kg), 5 (18.1 to 23 kg), 6 (23.1 to 32 kg), and 7 (> 32 kg). The experimental design was completely randomized, with processing conducted out in triplicate. Data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) to assess differences in pirarucu loin between weight classes. When ANOVA was statistically significant (α = 0.05), the averages were compared using Tukey’s test. Weight class 7 showed higher values of mineral matter = 1.43, crude protein = 28.93, and energy = 526.35 KJ∙100g-1. However, weight class 2 showed a higher value of total lipids, 2.60, and moisture, 78.19. The pirarucu loin showed essential fatty acids, EPA, DHA, AA, and ALA, while weight classes 4 and 5 had the highest percentages of PUFAs. However, all weight classes expressed high values in omegas 3, 6, 7, and 9. There is no need to market heavier fish, as pirarucu loin in lighter weight classes 3 and 4 already meet the nutritional demand of the market.

The determination of crude protein level in diets of aquatic organisms allows maximizing growth, decreasing feed costs and improving water quality. A nursery culture of Litopenaeus vannamei was carried out in superintensive biofloc systems using five diets with different protein levels (320 g kg-1 CP, 360 g kg-1 CP, 400 g kg-1 CP, 440 g kg-1 CP and 480 g kg-1 CP); each diet was used in quadruplicates. The experimental period lasted 35 days, and the shrimps (0.59± 0.001 g) were stocked at a density of 600 PL m-³, using 20 experimental units (50 L of useful volume). There were no significant differences in animal survival between treatments (p>0.05). The animals fed with 480 g kg-1 presented higher final weight, SGR when compared to the treatments fed with 320 g kg-1 (p<0.05). Furthermore, feeding shrimp with 32% CP diets results in a reduction in feed utilization and nutrient retention, thus increasing feed costs. Overall, the results show that it is possible to reduce the protein content of L. vannamei diets to up to 360 without affecting the zootechnical performance, survival and antioxidant capacity of the animals.

Integrated multitrophic aquaculture in ponds using substrate for periphyton as natural source of food 利用围岩底质作为天然食物来源的池塘综合多营养水产养殖

As a productive and sustainable alternative to fish farmers, the present study aims to evaluate the use of substrate for periphyton growth in an Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) with complementary species. The studied species were: Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and curimbatá (Prochilodus lineatus). The experiment had four treatments with three replicates that evaluated the IMTAs: [T100] Cb:C – tilapia inside hapas fed on recommended feed, with grass carp and curimbatás outside the hapas making use of natural food; [T50] Cb:C – the same species distribution with tilapia fed 50 % of the daily amount of commercial diet. Cb:C 100 and Cb:C 50 – grass carp and curimbatás fed on recommended feed at two feeding rates (100% and 50%) with substrate for periphyton growth in the feeding restriction treatment. In phase II, tilapias were included in all the treatments as a complementary species. Growth performance of fish and physical-chemical parameters of water were evaluated. In the proposed models, the species were efficient in utilizing the feed and in nutrient cycling, achieving productivity of 6 t/ha in the system without water renewal. Inserting secondary and complementary species reduced the feed conversion ratio (FCR) to values of 0.95 in systems under feed restriction and 1.28 in the groups that received 100% of commercial feed. Considering the reduction of the FCR and the high productivity, farmers can diversify their products in the same area without increasing inputs.

The studied species were: Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and curimbatá (Prochilodus lineatus). The experiment had four treatments with three replicates that evaluated the IMTAs: [T100] Cb:C – tilapia inside hapas fed on recommended feed, with grass carp and curimbatás outside the hapas making use of natural food; [T50] Cb:C – the same species distribution with tilapia fed 50 % of the daily amount of commercial diet. Cb:C 100 and Cb:C 50 – grass carp and curimbatás fed on recommended feed at two feeding rates (100% and 50%) with substrate for periphyton growth in the feeding restriction treatment. In phase II, tilapias were included in all the treatments as a complementary species. Growth performance of fish and physical-chemical parameters of water were evaluated. In the proposed models, the species were efficient in utilizing the feed and in nutrient cycling, achieving productivity of 6 t/ha in the system without water renewal. Inserting secondary and complementary species reduced the feed conversion ratio (FCR) to values of 0.95 in systems under feed restriction and 1.28 in the groups that received 100% of commercial feed. The aim of the present study was to assess histological features, sex steroid profile, and ovarian gene expression throughout the ovarian maturation of Genyatremus luteus in Brazilian Coastal Equatorial Amazon. Specimens were categorized into different gonadal maturation stages–immature (n = 7), maturing (n = 7), mature (n = 7), and spawned (n = 7)–based on histological features of ovarian follicles and on oocyte development. Plasma E2, 11-KT and 17α-OHP levels were measured through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The gene expression of estrogen (er) and LH (lhr) receptors in the ovary was analyzed through real-time polymerase chain reaction. The highest plasma E2 concentration was found in mature specimens (P< 0.05). Plasma 17α-OHP concentrations have significantly increased from the immature to the final maturation stage (P< 0.05). Maturational reproductive stage did not have any effect on plasma 11-KT concentrations. Er expression in ovaries has significantly increased throughout ovarian maturation (P < 0.05), and it remained high at mature and spawned stages. Lhr expression showed similar trend throughout the maturation process, although its peak was observed at spawned stage (P< 0.05). In conclusion, the gene expression profile of er and lhr and plasma E2 and 17α-OHP concentrations are proportional to oocyte development; they play important role in regulating ovarian development and ovulation in G. luteus.

This work evaluated the biofloc technology cultivation of Ulva ohnoi on its growth performance and biocompounds contents. Ulva ohnoi was cultivated under an initial density of 6 g·L-1 for 28 days using water from a biofloc tank which was exchanged daily at a 90% rate. Temperature, salinity, and illuminance were measured daily. Algae growth and their density was adjusted weekly. Results showed an average plant growth of 1.15%·day-1 (49.5 g·week-1). A significant difference was observed when comparing the initial (2.64 ± 0.3%) and final (4.62 ± 0.2%) ulvan concentration, in addition to a protein increase of 30.2%. No statistical differences were found for concentrations of phenolics and chlorophylls. An increase in flavonoids was observed on days 7 and 14 (0.41 ± 0.04; and 0.41 ± 0.07 μg·g-1 of dry weight), as well as a decrease in carotenoids (41.3%). In conclusion, increases in protein and ulvan were observed after Ulva ohnoi was cultivated in bioflocs

It is essential to provide data on fish stocks, especially those that appeared more recently on fishing landings. The present study estimated growth, mortality and evaluated the fish stock of Triportheus albus, Triportheus angulatus, Triportheus auratus, and Pellona flavipinnis in floodplain lakes in central Amazon, Manaus (AM), Brazil. Samplings were carried out monthly between 2006 and 2007 and bimonthly until 2008 using gillnets. We evaluated the growth parameters (L∞, k, t0, t_achor, Ø, A0.95), natural, total, and fishing mortality, exploitation rate, and yield per recruit. The results showed T. auratus had the lowest estimated current fishing mortality pressure, while T. angulatus and T. albus had the highest fishing mortality pressure. It indicates that T. angulatus and T. albus are heavily exploited commercially. Considering current fishing mortality, T. angulatus and T. albus presented values above the maximum sustainable yield, indicating that these species are being exploited in an unsustainable way. This was the first time these fisheries stocks were evaluated. Despite the data being from a few years ago, these values are the only available and may be the baseline for the fisheries management plans.

Use of nylon net packing to increase the survival time of cultured mussels 采用尼龙网包装,增加养殖贻贝的存活时间

Mussels survive a few days after harvesting, limiting the trade of these animals when alive. The study evaluated the effect of nylon net packing on the survival and shelf life of Perna perna mussels farmed in Brazil. Thirty samples containing 10 or 11 market-size mussels were stored in an incubator at 4°C for four days, half packed with nylon netting and the other half maintained within opened containers. The experiment analyzed the following parameters daily: survivorship, intervalvar fluid loss, total volatile bases, pH, and mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria counts. By the end of the assay, chemical and microbiological parameters were all acceptable for human consumption. All packed mussels survived up to the second day of storage, while the control group recorded an average survival of 29.7% in the same period. Packed mussels survive longer, probably because the tight net prevents animals from losing liquid by maintaining their shell valves closed during storage. This packaging method extends the shelf life of live products and improves the potential trading live mussels to consumer centers far from marine farms.

The present study aimed to verify whether the use of crude glycerin in the diet of juvenile Colossoma macropomum could promote histopathological changes in the liver and kidneys. 150 juveniles were used, divided into 15 tanks of 1000 liters (five treatments and three repetitions, n = 10). Five different diets with inclusion of crude glycerin (0%; 7.5%; 10%; 12.5%; 15%) were used in exchange for soybean oil and partial replacement of corn bran. The animals were fed to satiation for 60 days. After this period, liver and kidney samples from each group were submitted to histological processing and histopathological analysis. The semi-quantitative method was used to assess the lesions: calculation of Mean Alteration Values (MVA), which assess the occurrence of the lesion, and the Histopathological Alterations Index (HAI), which allows assessing the severity of the lesions. The results indicated significant non-harmful effects, but adaptive responses to the diet. In conclusion, the inclusion of up to 15% crude glycerin can be used without causing significant liver and kidney changes in C. macropomum juveniles.
