WoWMoM has been known for its successful workshop programs as well as its high-quality main conference papers. WoWMoM has identified emerging hot workshop topics which also continued to last and grow in the field. The timely selections of new topics have yielded several multi-year workshops proudly hosted by this year WoWMoM. Some previous WoWMoM workshops have grown to standalone conferences or continue to exist in other major mobile & wireless networking venues.

It gives us great pleasure to introduce the technical program of the third IEEE Workshop on Hot Topics in Mesh Networking (HotMESH 2011). Following the success of the previous editions, the HotMESH workshop is now a well-established, high profile forum for researchers, engineers, and practitioners to present state-of-the-art research in the field of wireless mesh networking. Although significant advances have taken place in this field in the last few years, fundamental open questions and technical challenges still remain to build highly scalable, reliable and cost-effective wireless backbones for mobile users. One of the issues of particular interest to this workshop edition is how wireless mesh networks could be integrates with and/or influence existing mobile and fixed broadband networks in order to create an integrated infrastructure that supports emerging services. Then, the main purpose of this workshop is to promote discussions on recent advances in the analysis design and implementation of systems, protocols and services for next generation mobile mesh networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area.

It is our pleasure to introduce the WoWMoM 2011's workshops program. The Workshops associated with WoWMoM feature a large range of topics beyond the main conference, to better cover and stimulate discussion on the emerging research areas in the exciting field of wireless, mobile and multimedia networks. As the integral part of the main conference, the purpose of the workshops is to provide a less formal and more focused forum where novel and stimulating ideas and experiences are shared among researchers both from industry and academia, on all the topics of interest for the wireless, mobile and multimedia networking community. The number and quality of the workshops contribute to the relevance of WoWMoM as one of the reference forums for the research community working on these topics.

As the organizing committee, it is our pleasure to present the proceedings of the 3rd IEEE International Workshop on Data Security and PrivAcy in wireless Networks (D-SPAN), held on June 25, 2012, in San Francisco, California, USA. The goal of this one-day workshop, organized in conjunction with the 13th IEEE WoWMoM 2012, is to exchange cutting-edge ideas for securing the next-generation wireless networks, systems and applications. The scope of D-SPAN includes a wide variety of topics, including security and privacy of data collection, transmission, storage, publishing, and sharing in wireless networks broadly defined such as cellular and mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET), cognitive and sensor networks to applying data analytics techniques to address security and privacy challenges in these networks. D-SPAN provides a forum for academic and industry researchers to present research ideas that build bridges across three communities: wireless networks and databases, and security.

In this paper, we present a linear programming formulation for the throughput optimization problem in wireless networks that support multi-packet reception (MPR) capability. The formulation takes into account the use of both directional and omni-directional antennas as well as the use of multiple transmitter interfaces per node. The joint routing and scheduling problem is decoupled into routing and scheduling subproblems. We show that the scheduling subproblem is intractable, and propose a polynomial time scheduling algorithm to solve it. We further demonstrate that, for certain type of networks, the completion time of the scheduling algorithm is at most two times the completion time of the the optimal scheduler, which is unknown. We use the proposed scheme for a preliminary study of several design parameters on the performance of MPR-capable networks, including the number of interfaces, the MPR capability and the beamwidth of the antennas.

An increasing number of mobile devices, including smartphones, use WLAN for accessing the Internet. Existing WLAN authentication mechanisms are either disruptive, such as presenting a captive web page prompting for password, or unreliable, enabling a malicious user to attack a part of operator's infrastructure. In this paper, we present a distributed authentication architecture for WLAN users providing instant network access without manual interactions. It supports terminal mobility across WLAN access points with the Host Identity Protocol (HIP), at the same time protecting the operator's infrastructure from external attacks. User data sent over a wireless link is protected by the IPsec ESP protocol. We present our architecture design and implementation experience on two OpenWrt WLAN access points, followed by measurement results of the working prototype. The system is being deployed into pilot use in the city-wide panOULU WLAN.
