CALCULATING THE AMOUNT OF DAILY SUGAR INTAKE IN JAPANESE YOUNG ADULT WOMEN: EFFECTS ON NUTRIENT INTAKE QUALITY AND FASTING BLOOD LIPID PROFILE 日本年轻成年女性每日糖摄入量的计算:对营养摄入质量和空腹血脂的影响

We investigate the amount of sugar intake from added sugars, beverages, and confectioneries. We also sought to elucidate the association between fasting blood data, including fasting lipid profile, and physical characteristics with the amount of sugar consumed in young adult Japanese women. Results: The ratio of sugar from confectioneries and sugar-sweetened beverages to all meals consumed daily in the HSG (55.9 ± 10.4%) was higher compared when compared with those in the LSG (27.3 ± 17.6%). Additionally, 62% of all subjects in this study consumed sugar amounts higher than the recommended 10% of their daily total energy intake. Discussion: The amount of sugar contained in seasonings can be high in daily dietary habit in Japan, and the total sugar intake per day is high even if the sugar intake from confectioneries and sugar-sweetened beverages is moderate. The lack of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibers can cause qualitative malnutrition. Received: June 11, 2023 Accepted: July 19, 2023

Vegan Vs Non-Vegan Diet Practice and its Effect on TSH, Creatinine, bone mass levels Among Older Adults Living in Southeast Asian Countries 素食与非素食饮食习惯及其对东南亚国家老年人TSH、肌酐、骨量水平的影响

There are many cases of hypothyroidism, kidney diseases, and poor bone health among older adults in southeast Asia. This study aims to assess the role of two major diet practices that are vegan and non-vegan in response to the increase of TSH (hypothyroidism), creatinine (CKD), and decrease of bone mass due to improper calcium metabolism in the older adult population in SEA countries. A total of 95 patients were included in the study for six months in 2021, suffering from the mentioned health issues. In this descriptive cross-sectional study with a quota sampling method, the participants interested in paid virtual diet consultations were requested for filling out pre-tested open-ended questionnaires related to their dietary habits, medicines, and diagnostic tests before online platform consultations. Jamovi version 2.2.5 as the software was applied for all types of data analysis. An independent sample T was used to analyze the mean difference between dependent variables: levels of TSH, creatinine, bone mass, calcium, and two independent groups of food habits (vegan vs. non-vegan) and gender (male and female). The study found 24 vegans and 71 non-vegans out of 62 females and 33 males above 50 years of patients. Results showed no significance with any test values irrespective of gender or food habits. At the same time, while we compare effect size, the food habits group was associated with a decrease in the value of the outcome: TSH -0.2008, bone mass -0.3299, and -0.3448 (Cohen’s d test). Therefore, the study can conclude that improper vegan or non-vegan diets can influence TSH, creatinine, and bone mass among older adults of both sexes in SEA regions.

Safety, Feasibility, and Biomarker Effects of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation Among Women at High Risk for Breast Cancer. 在乳腺癌高危妇女中补充大剂量维生素D的安全性、可行性和生物标志物效应

Vitamin D deficiency is a potentially modifiable risk factor that may be targeted for breast cancer prevention. We examined the safety, feasibility, and biomarker effects of high-dose vitamin D among women at high risk for breast cancer. Forty high-risk women, defined as a 5-year breast cancer risk ≥1.67% per the Gail model, lobular or ductal carcinoma in situ, were assigned to a 1-year intervention of vitamin D3 20,000 IU or 30,000 IU weekly. Participants were monitored for toxicity every 3 months, underwent serial blood draws at baseline, 6 and 12 months, and a digital mammogram at baseline and 12 months. Biomarker endpoints included serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D], parathyroid hormone (PTH), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), IGF binding protein (IGFBP-3), and mammographic density (MD) using Cumulus software. From November 2007 to January 2011, we enrolled 40 women; 37 were evaluable at 6 months and 30 at 12 months. One patient was taken off study for hypercalciuria; otherwise, the intervention was well tolerated. From baseline to 12 months, mean serum 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D rose from 20.0 to 46.9 ng/ml and 69.7 to 98.1 pg/ml, respectively (p<0.01). Serum PTH decreased by 12% at 6 months and IGF-1/IGFBP-3 ratio decreased by 4.3% at 12 months (p<0.05). There was no significant change in MD regardless of menopausal status or dose level. We demonstrated that 1 year of high-dose vitamin D3 was associated with a significant increase in circulating vitamin D levels and favorable effects on IGF signaling, but no significant change in MD.

From November 2007 to January 2011, we enrolled 40 women; 37 were evaluable at 6 months and 30 at 12 months. One patient was taken off study for hypercalciuria; otherwise, the intervention was well tolerated. From baseline to 12 months, mean serum 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)<sub>2</sub>D rose from 20.0 to 46.9 ng/ml and 69.7 to 98.1 pg/ml, respectively (p<0.01). Serum PTH decreased by 12% at 6 months and IGF-1/IGFBP-3 ratio decreased by 4.3% at 12 months (p<0.05). There was no significant change in MD regardless of menopausal status or dose level.
