The purpose of this study was to produce a culturally sensitive COVID-19 curriculum for primarily African Americans related to the risks of the health impacts of COVID-19. Community engagement was initiated to deliver risk communication for COVID-19 to community trainers who, in turn, recruited and trained additional community trainers. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Training investigators conducted training from May 2021 through January 2023. A total of twenty community trainers were trained over a two-year period for 2021 and 2023. Community trainers recruited and trained two hundred additional trainers (one hundred trainers for each year). Data were collected in Qualtrics. © and evaluated the effectiveness of the training delivered to the community trainers measuring learning gains. The differences between pre-and post-learning gains (n=146) were positive (+451 learning gains difference; average learning gain (8.8%). The pre-post median number of correct answers improved (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p<0.001). Eighteen questions (out of 35) had substantial differences in proportions at the α=.05 level (McNemar test). The overall train-the-trainer community training satisfaction survey had a mean of 4.7 (±0.7), indicating high satisfaction of the community trainers. Community trainers improved their knowledge of COVID-19 risks. These behavioral and preventative measures, such as social distancing, wearing face masks, adopting sanitation, adhering to quarantine-isolation practices, rejecting misinformation, and discussing the pros and cons of vaccinations and boosters, likely prevented some COVID-19 infections.

Pneumoconiosis is the most common occupational disease in the world; it is deadly but preventable. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological trends and characteristics of pneumoconiosis in the large industrial Shandong Province of China to facilitate prevention and control measures. Data from 2004-2019 were extracted from an occupational disease reporting system regarding morbidity, regional distribution, industry distribution, types of pneumoconiosis, dust exposure duration, and age at diagnosis. A total of 15,853 pneumoconiosis cases were identified and classified as stage I (13,879 cases), stage II (1,402 cases), and stage III (572 cases). Yantai was the region with the most cases, which mainly involved cases of silicosis and coal workers’ pneumoconiosis among individuals who were employed in mining and manufacturing industries. A high risk of pneumoconiosis was associated with rock drilling, road heading, and coal mixing. The average age at diagnosis was 52 years, and the average duration of dust exposure was 18 years. The incidence of pneumoconiosis in Shandong Province is still high, with clear concentrations in specific regions, industries, and types of work, which should be targeted for pneumoconiosis prevention and control measures. Industrial regulations and steps to control dust generation are needed to help reduce the incidence of pneumoconiosis.

Spinal biomechanical alignment is now able to be altered through the use of unique sound wave technology. This methodological commentary will correlate recent studies demonstrating the ability of sound waves to carry mass, how the EPIC technique spinal procedure uses a sound wave impulse to create measurable changes in spinal alignment, and the clinical safety and efficacy of this approach. The EPIC technique is a direct genealogical descendant of the technique originally developed by the founding family of chiropractic. With sound wave therapies currently being used to break up kidney stones, called lithotripsy, in physical therapy for the treatment of soft tissue injuries, in the treatment of prostate cancer, and in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, it is possible that the use of sound wave therapies may enter into the realm of altering joint biomechanics. Through a neurovascular examination, the EPIC technique spinal procedure can ascertain the presence of craniocervical subluxation, followed by acquiring multi-dimensional radiographic images for structural analysis. Currently using digital radiographic analysis, the EPIC technique acquires an epigenetic profile of structural asymmetries as well as a multi-directional biomechanical malposition profile of the spine, combining both profiles to ascertain the exact degrees for realignment. EPIC clinics have successfully utilized EPIC on over 20,000 cases. Comparison of pre-treatment biomechanical lateral displacement of the C1 vertebra around the Z-axis measured on digital radiographs, and post-treatment biomechanical lateral displacement of the C1 vertebra measured on digital radiographs immediately following the procedure, demonstrated an average 52% reduction in lateral biomechanical displacement around the Z-axis in a select group of over 2,000 cases. While more research is required, we are encouraged by these preliminary results. WC 265.

The concept of aging in place discusses policies, strategies and methodologies that meet the complex needs of older people in their living environment. For marginalized individuals, however, what defines place is more complex and subject to conflicting influences. This research investigates the determinants of emergency shelter utilization by older people experiencing homelessness using an aging in place framework. Qualitative interviews were conducted with a group of 53 sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons aged 55 and older in Upstate South Carolina, United States of America. Collected data were examined using a thematic content analysis. Recurring themes were categorized into barriers and facilitators. Multigenerational living, regulations, lack of privacy, security concerns and a lack of elderly-friendly accommodations were identified as barriers. Conversely, shelters that established trust, protection, and relationships, complemented with an array of social and medical services, facilitated shelter utilization. These factors were classified into two interacting domains: homeless individuals’ psychosocial needs and the shelters’ institutional characteristics. An aging in place approach integrates individuals’ experiences, social interactions, community-based services, mobility, and the built environment. This study offers a new framework for designing and modifying emergency shelters to increase uptake by elderly clients in a perspective of healthy aging for all.
