Our study aimed to underline the morphological characters of 25 soybean varieties of both Romanian and foreign origin in the ecopedological background of SCDA Turda in the presence of a nitrogen-fixing bacteria indigenous to the soil. Activities undertaken to reach this goal encompassed carrying out biometrical determinations of the plants (root length, plant height and number of leaves) and registering the number of nodules for each separate variety. Analyzing the data regarding the afore-mentioned parameters revealed significant morphological differences between the varieties, all of which were statistically relevant.

Active people energy demands are usually fulfilled by the consumption of confectionery products. However, even if confectionery products are well known as having high energy content, in the case of hard activities, some energy supplements comprising vitamins (especially from B group) and CNS stimulants (caffeine, taurine) are necessary. The present work aimed to characterize a new developed product “Energizing Jellies†which combine the high energy content of jellies type products with the properties and flavors of energy drinks. During this work it was determined the “Energizing jellies†general chemical composition in terms of moisture, acidity, total and reducing sugar. The caffeine content of the premix used, syrup and jelly was also assessed. Moreover it was performed a comparison between the premix used and the final product related to volatile compounds as well as antioxidant capacity. The new jelly is intended for active people, being a product easy to eat which can be consumed in small portions.

Urban sprawl has been plaguing Western European and American cities for the last 70 years. One has fought against this phenomenon all over the world with a combination of strategic planning and urban regulations, focusing on growth management, sustainable development and preservation of farmland. East European cities, Romanian cities included, have been rapaciously consuming the free natural and agricultural land around them, without long-term development policies. The aim of this paper is analyzing urban sprawl around Timișoara and finding efficient ways of economizing urban and rural land. The article is based on several urban studies, statistical and traffic data showing the magnitude of the phenomenon and its dramatic effects on the environment. The European Union required to recent members to follow the path set by the developed countries, even if their economies have a system more or less centralized inherited from communism. It is still unclear who should be responsible for urban planning; the rules and regulations are made along the way, while the investors’ pressure is huge. Meanwhile extended rural and agricultural land might be destroyed. Most politicians do not acknowledge this problem as they approve further expansion into farmland without any previous planning. This paper might be just tackling this subject, but its target should be making urban sprawl more visible, understanding its dimension and dramatic effects around Romanian cities.

In any national economy, agriculture is one of the key sectors of economic activity overall. As always anthropogenic activities held in conjunction and, not infrequently, the adversarial relationship with the environment, agriculture accumulate elements of society, from food security to social stability. In this context, one of the objectives of long-term agricultural development strategy must be accounted for to ensure food security threshold. This paper aims to study the scientific endeavor further the current concepts of food security and the challenges facing countries in this regard. Every day, the world's population grows by about 220,000 people and the world population every year we add 80 million people. All these people must have access to sufficient and safe food. Globalization of the food chain causes constant new challenges and risks to health and interests of consumers. This article was prepared as a basic research as sources of information: the international literature, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization - United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) data, official statistics etc. According to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization - United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization), food security means “guaranteeing each individual at all times, in any place or time of access to adequate and healthy diet to allow him to have a regime sufficient food for a healthy and active lifeâ€. Multidimensional nature of food security, just as the fight against poverty, calls a good correlation between the various sectors - agriculture, commerce, infrastructure, health - and the variety of intervention levels - local, national, international. In recent years indicate that there are problems of food insecurity in 86 countries, 43 African, 24 Asian, 9 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 7 in Oceania and Europe 3. In 2004, 35 countries have received emergency aid because of the food crisis. The main causes were: military and civil conflicts, post-conflict situations, refugees, economic disadvantaged areas and climate issues. Global agricultural production should increase by at least 3% per year to provide live feed of the rising population, according to a study by the Economist Intelligence Unit. At present, current agricultural productivity growth is only 2%. In the present research work, we demonstrated that food security is a global problem of humanity, in the context of population growth, climate change and economic crisis. The food security is influenced by four groups of factors, namely: the social - economic and political, agro-food sector performance, social protection and health and hygiene.

AbstractHemp (Cannabis sativa L.) was used for textile and cordage more than 4000 years. The cultivation of industrial hemp declined in the 19th century but it remains one of the oldest crops in history. Despite of the decline, nowadays interest for this crop has recently been renewed within various European countries (Roman et al., 2012). The aim of the research is to observe the evolution of production values and physical parameters (MMB- grain) under the influence of different seeding space and organic fertilization level recorded in some hemp varieties approved in Romania, with a low level of THC.

Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) represents a worldwide major problem in wheat production, because it causes huge loss of grain quality. PHS occurs when germination of grains takes place in the spike before harvest and it is influenced by high humidity. The goal of this study was to find QTLs (quantitative trait loci) on chromosomal regions from Romanian wheat and the identification of specific markers that can be used for plant breeding in order to improve resistance to pre-harvest sprouting. The parental lines with different sensibility to pre-harvest sprouting (Turda 95-sensible, Turda 18-94-resistant, Lovrin 32-sensible, Fundulea 29 - resistant) were used for the genotypic characterization using microsatellite markers. A total of 119 from 640 SSR (simple sequence repeats) markers used on the parental lines indicated polymorphism. The initial primer test with the polymorphic markers on the cross lines: Turda 95(S) x Turda 18-94(R), Turda 95(S) x Fundulea 29 (R), Turda 18-94(R) x Lovrin 32 (S) showed that the cross between Turda 95(S) x Turda 18-94(R) had the highest number of segregating markers in the population. 111 F2 lines of the cross Turda 95(S) x Turda 18-94(R) now are being genotypic and phenotypic characterized in order to detect the QTLs underlying pre-harvest sprouting resistance.

Like other legumes, soybeans are rich in nutrients. However, the macronutrient profile of soybeans differs in some important ways from most other legumes. Soybeans are higher in both protein and oil content than other beans and are relatively low in carbohydrates. Food industry use products using soybean or soybean-derived products as one of the main ingredients. The main characteristics for a soybean variety to be used as raw material for the food industry are: light hilum colour, high protein content, low content in allergent factors. The new orientation for the Breeding Program at ARDS Turda for variety breeding is to offer soybean varieties with special use such as varieties for human consumption. The characteristics and features of the soybean varieties created at A.R.D.S. Turda recommend them to have possible utilization  in the food industry.

A special importance in long developing of plum is the health of the primary elements of stem and main branches structure. The bark injuries (wounds) may be of mechanical or pathological origin or a combination between these. Monitoring consisted in investigating a great number of affected trees from Reghin area, the number of injuries that damage them and type of injuries: lesions without Stereum purpureum and Phellinus ignarius infection or lesions infected with these fungi; lesions with or without callus. The observed cultivars were commonly found in the Reghin area: de Bistrita, Stanley, Anna Spath and Silvia. In the present paper, we can say that in all four plantations the highest percentage of lesions observed were without infection but from the infected wounds Stereum purpureum was the most encountered fungus.

Acacia raddiana or Acacia tortilis (Forsk) Hyane subsp. raddiana (Savi) Bernan, (Fabaceae) is characterized by a great ecological plasticity. It is largely used by the local populations as medicinal plants, fodder, wood energy, coal because it high calorific value. This plant thus plays a big role in rural economy because it is also appreciated in craft industry and for the clothes, tools and kitchen utensil manufacture. The study of the intensity osmotic stress effect on the germination of Acacia raddiana seeds reveals that there is a very strong negative correlation between the increase of the concentration of PEG and the germination rate (r = -0.9251). The fact remains that in spite of very small negative potential, Acacia raddiana seeds are very resistant since it coming to sprout at potential matching -6.0 MPa. In otherwise, the foliar RWC of seedling remained stable during the 25 days of treatment at about 81.61 ± 7.61% (control) and dropped from 17th to 25th day at 32% (stressed). The growth was also affected by stress. Thus, both leaves number and stem height is reduced in stressed plants compared to controls.
