The present analysis examines a number of fairly recent research in-sights and the underlying sources related to the early phases of Richard Thurnwald’s career. These phases unfolded mainly in Vienna, Bosnia and Graz, before Thurn-wald moved to Berlin in 1901, eventually to become one of the world’s best-known socio-cultural anthropologists from the German-speaking countries in the twen-tieth century. This article examines Thurnwald’s fieldwork experience in Bosnia against the background of that region’s status in the Habsburg Empire, and in view of the conceptual, methodological and linguistic training Thurnwald brought with him. It then contextualizes Thurnwald’s field methods within a wider spectrum of the methodological pluralism of Vienna’s academic landscapes, and examines the role of Ludwig Gumplowicz in Graz for shaping Thurnwald’s next career moves. As a result, a detailed assessment of the continuities and discontinuities between this and subsequent phases in Thurnwald’s career promotes an improved understan-ding of his biography and oeuvre.

La religion de la mort en Egypte ancienne differe de facon significative des autres civilisations anciennes en ce qu'elle differencie a cote du monde des vivants et du monde des morts un troisieme monde elyseen. L'existence humaine etant limitee aux deux premiers mondes dans la plupart des autres civilisations anciennes, l'existence de l'Elysee dans la vision du monde et dans le culte des morts en Egypte s'inscrit egalement dans une perspective religieuse de la redemption et du salut. Mettant d'abord en lumiere l'origine politique de l'Elysee en Egypte ancienne, l'A. examine ensuite les consequences des particularites structurelles de la religion egyptienne pour la conception de la personne. Comment est conceptualise l'etre humain dans le cadre d'une religion qui concoit la mort et le monde des morts uniquement comme une transition entre les moments de son existence terrestre et de sa nouvelle vie dans le monde des dieux en tant qu'esprit d'ancetre transfigure, tel que l'A. l'interprete dans le terme egyptien Ach ? La particularite egyptienne s'exprime egalement dans son polytheisme - ou plutot cosmotheisme - qui renvoie a un rapport symbiotique a la mort
