Autumn A. Arnett

When Dr. Susan R. Burns left the suburbs of Topeka, Kansas, for college, she wasn’t following a well-trodden family path. She was the third daughter in a tight-knit Midwestern family, but the first to leave home for higher education. “I had no idea what I was doing,” she says. “I was a good student … and I knew more school meant more money, so I was just trying to get through school fast.”

Promoting wellness through pet-friendly academic work environments
Pub Date : 2026-02-10 DOI: 10.1002/dap.70037
Ahmed Radwan

Workplace stress, burnout, and depression are common in higher education institutions, affecting employees’ job performance, morale, and retention. These challenges underscore the need for institutions to incorporate holistic wellness interventions that extend beyond traditional programming. One proposed approach is the incorporation of pet-friendly policies. Interactions with animals have been shown to reduce stress, promote emotional regulation, physical health, and social connectedness. In academic environments such benefits may translate into stronger teams and healthier work environments

Reflect Upon and Develop Your Own Leadership Journey
Pub Date : 2026-01-11 DOI: 10.1002/dap.70012
Dawn Z. Hodges Ph.D.

I recently wrote “Like life, leadership is a journey.” I told about the life of Charles S. Lauer and quoted him as saying, “Leaders don’t force people to follow — they invite them on a journey.” I mentioned that this month I would be writing about my own leadership journey. It's not an easy task. One can write about all the jobs and titles one has had, but that doesn’t make one a leader.

Reducing Stress at Work 减轻工作压力
Pub Date : 2026-01-11 DOI: 10.1002/dap.70014
David C. Schwebel Ph.D.

Psychologists categorize stress into two types: acute and chronic. Acute stress emerges following a particular event or situation. It is generally short term, lasting anywhere from seconds to days. An example is stress experienced the day a supervisor informs an employee she is being let go. Chronic stress, in contrast, arises as a result of multiple co-occurring stressors. It generally has a long and sometimes indefinite duration. An example may be multiple stressors associated with an institution's broad financial challenges.
