This paper proposes a new optical communication system using the Pulse Interval and Width Modulated Code. It is constructed as combinations of pulse width and interval. Then it is easy to understand that the transmission capacity of this Code is bigger than those of Pulse Width Modulation and/or Differencial Pulse Position Modulation.

The results of a study of subjective reactions to a variety of impairments in CATV systems is presented. Methods of simulating and measuring random noise, inter-modulation, cross-modulation, co-channel and adjacent channel interference, and hum modulation are described. The effects of some of these impairments on picture quality, as perceived by a group of subjects are shown. The results provide an indication of the continuous relationship between picture quality and impairment level.

When will optical fiber CATV replace coaxial CATV? A study of current literature shows that the time is not yet, although optical fibers have been used for supertrunks and other special purposes. The purpose of the author is to examine some of the calculations which can be used on optical CATV systems as well as some of the improvements necessary for widespread use of optical CATV systems.

This paper reports analytical and experimental work in evaluating AlGaAs heterojunction laser diodes and light-emitting diodes (LED) for utilization in analog optical links (in particular TV channels) employing optical fibers. The analytical work focuses on using the static transfer function to predict distortion, based-on curve fitting (Section C) and calculation of distortion components (Section B). The purpose is to avoid laborious frequency measurements. Also of interest is the determination of channel spacing (Section E) to avoid 2nd and 3rd order interference for devices (lasers and LED's) with rather poor linearity.

Pulse-interval modulation (PIM) is reviewed considering its application to the voice band transmission of still picture signals in industrial TV systems. Although PIM seems to have scarcely been utilized in practice, some advantages as an analog pulse modulation can be expected in the case of narrowband transmission. As to the signal-to-noise ratio and the analog message bandwidth, comparisions with PPM and FM are made, which proves that PIM is suited for the TV signal transmission. The dominant defect of PIM is the matter concerning the errors introduced into the pulse spacing by the mutual interferences of bandlimited pulses. Assuming an ideal filter, the effects of bandlimiting are discussed. The differential gain characteristics, and the interference outputs owing to the unwanted lower sidebands of a pulse train are examined, which indicates the effectiveness of lowpass filtering of post-detection signals.
