Experimental and theoretical investigations of some thermodynamic, transport and structural properties of very concentrated aqueous electrolyte solutions are reviewed. Attention is focussed on the range of concentrations between anhydrous molten salts and the hydrate melts. In this region, the hydration shells of the ions are incomplete, and ion-ion, ion-water, and water-water interactions must be considered. Extensions of the Debye-Huckel theory are not valid in this region, and models based on anhydrous molten salts may be useful.

The double-isotope-tracer technique provides a way of investigating a number of aspects concerning reaction mechanisms. In the case of the peroxyacid decomposition it is seen that the structures of two transition states of identical constitution were clarified. In the oxidation of hydrazine the isotope data showed what intermediates were present and also showed something about the timing of bond breaking of these intermediates. Also, in the case of the hydrazine oxidations and peroxide decompositions the positions of bond breaking were discovered. The technique will certainly be used in further studies of the cage effect. Finally, it is possible to study reactions which occur when there is no net chemical change.
