Working with a service vendor is different from buying a physical product; what the client and the vendor are investing in is a partnership that has to be developed over time. Once the library has committed to dealing with a new serials vendor, both the library and the vendor must go through a transition process. This article explores the practical aspects of this evolution, looking at the human perspective as well as the technological considerations. Human aspects include understanding each person’s role in the relationship, getting used to each other’s organizational culture, communicating needs and expectations effectively, and learning to work together. Technological considerations include getting computer systems to talk to each other; understanding how each partner’s computer environment affects its procedures for handling transactions such as orders, claims, changes, and payments; and finding ways to work around the limitations of the respective systems and software.

Old Wine Into New Bottles: Responses To New Approaches In Library Education 旧酒换新瓶:对图书馆教育新方法的回应

Library schools historically have paid little attention to paradigm shifts in society. They have been slow to change their curricula in meaningful ways, and their leaders have not paid enough attention to forces from the external social environment. The limited theoretical foundation for librarianship leaves librarians without a clear sense of future direction. Five themes related to improving library education were proposed and discussed at the Feather River Institute held in May 1997.

    Librarians lack a strong sense of identity.

  • 2.

    The profession of librarianship lacks an adequate body of underlying theory.

  • 3.

    Library schools and the library profession have been weak in regulating themselves.

  • 4.

    Library schools have been slow to respond to technological changes.

  • 5.

    The time is ripe for major changes in the curricula of library schools.

What’s For Dinner? Continuing Education After the MLIS 晚餐吃什么?MLIS之后的继续教育

This paper examines the current status of continuing education courses offered by American schools of Library and Information Science. Special emphasis is given to offerings for librarians working in collection development and acquisitions. Alternative mechanisms for delivering continuing education courses to the profession are discussed. A survey of 47 American schools reveals that only 8.9% of the 280 continuing education workshops fit the traditional definition of technical services. Suggestions are made as to how practitioners and educators can increase the continuing education offerings available for technical services, collection development, and acquisitions librarians.
