It is shown that if a d.c. magnetic field imposed on a plasma is given a small low-frequency modulation, Alfvèn waves may be excited in the plasma through parametric resonance.

Transverse and longitudinal phonon scattering was measured from 300°K to 80°K with special attention to the structure change around 110°K. A scattering (incident frequency) at the transition temperature suggests a phase transition of order n > 1.

An expansion for the temperature dependence of Hc2(T) in the realm T/Tc ⪡ 1 is developed from the recent theories of Werthamer et al. and of Maki and is used to analyze our data for several Zr-Nb alloys. These theories do not consistently account for the temperature dependence of Hc2(T) in these alloys for both low temperatures and for T near Tc.

The heat capacity of ferromagnetic EuS has been measured in a magnetic field at liquid helium temperatures. The experimental results compare favorably with spin wave calculations and indicate first and second neighbor exchange interactions of J1/kB = 0.20°K and of J2/kB = -0.06°K respectively.
