The operation of the magnetic levitation electrometer suggested in ref. 1 is described. Measurements on the first five graphite grains (containing altogether ∼ 1016 nucleons) exclude the presence of quarks in them; a future program of search for terrestrial quarks by this instrument is outlined.

It is shown that the residue gi of the interaction poles are not the right measure for the effect of the forces. A simple example is constructed to clarify this point. The products giDi should be used instead, where Di are the values of the D function at the positions of the poles.

The T = 0, J = 1, 2 and 3 positive parity levels of a six nucleon system are calculated using single-particle orbitals derived from a deformed oscillator potential. Proper eigenfunctions of J2 are projected through Hill-Wheeler integrals. Simplified forces are used so that the entire deformation is due to the tensor force. It is found that, to a very good approximation, all three levels may be generated from a single intrinsic function with constant size and deformation parameters. The derived level scheme indicates that the vector effects of the tensor force, previously calculated by second-order perturbation theory, are included in this model.

Analysis of 2764 double scattering events of antiprotons at 1.18 GeV/c in the 81 cm Saclay hydrogen bubble chamber yields an asymmetry of (−2.3±3)% for the angular region 15° ⩽ θc.m. ⩽ 60°, with an average angle θc.m. = 28°. This would correspond to an upper limit of 20% for the polarization of the antiproton at 95% confidence limit.

The elastic scattering of 3.55 GeV/c π+ and π− mesons by protons was measured at centre-of-mass angles between 165° and 177°. The angular distributions for 864 events show a steeply rising backward peak for π+p, while the shape is less clear for π−p.
