Until recently, there was very little overlap between technological forecasters and economists specializing in input-output analysis. I shall argue that each field supplies information and insight essential to progress in the other. Part I of this paper explains how technological forecasts and input output are interrelated. Part II considers some practical applications that bridge the two fields and the problems they entail.
The article “Technology and Society” by Dr. J. Herbert Hollomon in the Oklahoma Business Bulletin of January 1970, attendance at the “Environmental Forecasting Conference” at the University of Texas in January 1970, and some recent experiences in classroom teaching of the subject “Technological Forecasting” impel me to submit this paper. The objective of this article is to present some views on the development of a curriculum which would prepare students to cope with the problems raised by Dr. Hollomon's closing observation “If we do not learn how to control the adverse effects of technology we can never benefit from its bounty.” Attention of the reader is invited to the referenced article and the questions and problems raised therein by Dr. Hollomon.
