QoS is an integral component of any networking system, particularly, with the current and future great diversity of the users' applications and their manifold requirements. It is believed that the IP layer may not be the convergence layer with respect to QoS. In this paper a new QoS mechanism is introduced for Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks that support Staged Reservation Scheme (SRS). For the new QoS mechanisms to be realizable and efficient in the optical burst-switched networks, the simplicity principle was one of the most important design considerations.

IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) is the core of Next Generation Network (NGN) which provides high quality combination of different multimedia services. Although IMS open core architecture has made it an easy access network for clients, it has result in some security weaknesses and vulnerabilities, by which attacks and threats try to enter network. Denial of service attacks (DoS), prevent legitimate users from using services by overloading network resources. These attacks are usually based on sending flooding packets by spoofed IP addresses and are called Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), these attacks can be generated through REGISTER messages that are followed by heavy weighted process of registration in Call Session Control Function (CSCF) entities. In this paper an adaptive CUSUM algorithm is proposed which can differ peak time traffic from attack traffic and detect flooding attacks with low values of False Alarm Rates (FAR) and of Detection Delays (DD) and Detection Time (DT).

Self-organizing network/s (SON) was promoted by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN). SON has been introduced since in 3GPP Release-8, Release-9 and currently included in Release-10 framework as an excellent solution that promises improvements and market potential for future wireless networks. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview on SON in advanced wireless networks such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced systems. Although SON promises several advantages for both network operators and users, there are still challenges in implementing SON network in reality. Therefore, this paper addresses those possible challenges, discusses about SON implementation in inter-cell interference of cross-tier networks and provides future trends of the research area.

In mobile environment, pre-fetching is used to prevent network congestion, delays and latency problems during disconnection. Lately, the pre-fetching strategies become more complicated in which to support new types of application especially in wireless environments. Due to this complication, new method is introduced where it requires data mining technique to improve the pre-fetching process. Previously, the pre-fetched data item is filtered using an data driven measurement for data interestingness and the data generated are based on the structure of a query pattern and quantified using statistical methods. The measurement is not good enough to solve the rule quality problems as in predicting next query in mobile environment. In this paper, a new measurement method is proposed to generate new criterion of prefetched data items before sending to mobile users. This method is improved by introducing user driven measurement for user interestingness where it will consider the subjectivity and the understandability of the users.

IEEE 802.11 WLANs have reached an important stage and have become a common technology for wireless access due to its low cost, ease of deployment and mobility support. However, IEEE 802.11 standard cannot support desired Quality of Service (QoS) for delay-sensitive multimedia applications. Therefore, IEEE 802.11e standard which aims to support QoS by providing different priorities to different types of frames was specified in 2005. However, there are still unsolved performance issues such as optimization of throughput, limiting the delay and packet loss ratio. In this paper, we first present a local estimation method of node quantity and channel density to let the mobile nodes change their parameters according to the channel conditions. Then, we propose a QoS adaptation for delay-sensitive VoIP applications. Proposed algorithm only uses its local information and can be easily implemented without any changes on the current IEEE 802.11e standard. Simulation results show better voice quality and higher overall throughput than the standard IEEE 802.11e.

This work analyzes well-known DM techniques in Weka workbench, and reports the simulation results of applying four selected DM techniques and classifiers in the open source workbench to the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) problem in an automobile enterprise. It is proposed that data mining techniques to be used in aiding the salesperson and management of the enterprise for effective decision making. This approach was applied to 500 preprocessed records out of 2000 raw data sets for the past 5 years. Simulation results show that the large volume of customer historical data can play a value-added role for enterprise development in a way that the mined data helps them to study customer behavior so that personalized services can be provided. This paper also discusses the evaluation results of the four classifiers used in mining the customer data.

In wireless communication, parallel transmission of symbols using multi carriers is applied to achieve high efficiency in terms of throughput and better transmission quality. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the techniques for parallel transmission. In multipath environment the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is improved by introducing some kind of channel coding. Coded OFDM (COFDM) is the new candidate for application such as DAB and DVB-T due to its better performance in fading environment. However high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) is a major demerit of OFDM system, it leads to increased complexity of circuit and reduced efficiency of RF amplifier. In this paper our aim is to evaluate the PAPR of COFDM system and reducing its effect by clipping, Selected Mapping (SLM) and Partial Transmit Sequence (PTS) techniques. COFDM system used here comply with IEEE 802.11a specifications and Reed Solomon (RS) codes along with convolution codes are used for channel coding purpose. Channel used for consideration is AWGN. The performance is evaluated in terms of PAPR value and BER.

Support Vector Machine (SVM) is an efficient data mining approach for data classification. However, SVM algorithm requires very large memory requirement and computational time to deal with very large dataset. To reduce the computational time during the process of training the SVM, a combination of distributed and parallel computing method, CoDLib have been proposed. Instead of using a single machine for parallel computing, multiple machines in a cluster are used. Message Passing Interface (MPI) is used in the communication between machines in the cluster. The original dataset is split and distributed to the respective machines. Experiments results shows a great speed up on the training of the MNIST dataset where training time has been significantly reduced compared with standard LIBSVM without affecting the quality of the SVM.

In 2007, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) was established as one of the first private universities in Malaysia that provides quality and excellent services in education (teaching and learning), research, and consultancy. Along with the establishment, the UNITEN Training and Consultancy (UTC) Unit was instituted as a channel for UNITEN lecturers in extending their skills to the external parties relating to consultancy, training, and short courses. However, there exists no platform for the knowledge created out of these jobs to be shared with other lecturers. This paper proposes the development of a conceptual knowledge management framework as a new consultancy service framework encompassing both internal UNITEN processes and its clients.

The problem of compressing small messages has become very important in today's world as there is a shift towards a global mobile environment. The mobile world is characterized by lot of critical resources one of them being bandwidth. Saving in bandwidth directly counts as saving in cost. Compression of on-the-fly data is by far the most commonly used method to reduce the amount of data being sent. In this paper we propose a novel encoding scheme for small text messages. We have developed this encoding scheme using English as a reference language. We have compared our algorithm to current compression methods which are superior when performed on large texts but do not work well for small messages. We found that our algorithm compresses data by at least 20% better than other methods.
