Power-performance analysis of JVM implementations JVM实现的电源性能分析

Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) work between the Java application programs and the operating systems (and their underlying hardware platforms) to provide the ‘write-once run-anywhere’ property of the Java language. However, this property also implies that the runtime efficiency, in terms of both performance and power-consumption, can be affected by the implementations of JVM. In this paper, we present a case study of performance-power analysis of JVM implementations. We run SPECjvm2008 with OpenJDK and IBM I9 on an Atom-based netbook with Ubuntu operating system. Our observations are as follows: (1) the relative performance of OpenJDK ranges from 44 to 289% of J9, (2) the dynamic power consumption ranges from 2.8 to 7.2 Watts among benchmark programs. However, the power consumptions of two JVMs for the same workload are relatively similar. Therefore, the power-performance efficiency is mostly affected by the relative performance. (3) the effectiveness of multi-threading varies among benchmark programs as well as among JVMs. In general, running benchmark with a single-thread loses more in performance than in power consumption. Exceptions are compress, fft.small (OpenJDK only) and lu.small. (4) for most benchmark programs (except scimark), the power consumptions seem to be correlated to linear and square root of L2 reference and L2 miss rates, respectively.

A simulation tool to evaluate the usability of agent centric Resource-Event-Agent (REA) database modeling methodology: The development of revenue cycle in accounting information system 以代理为中心的资源-事件-代理(Resource-Event-Agent, REA)数据库建模方法的可用性评估仿真工具:会计信息系统中收益周期的发展

REA modeling technique is very important in generating a well-structured database which will be able to affect the performance of any accounting information system. The author has implemented quantitative analysis by generating mathematical algorithms to compare efficiency between conventional and Agent Centric REA Modeling. However, most of the end users do not really understand the representation of mathematical algorithms. Hence, agent derivation mathematical algorithms have been converted into a simulation tool which plays a vital role in performing qualitative analysis, which involves the analysis towards agent centric simulation system's usability from users' perspective. The amount of 20 third year students from department of Science and System Management, Fakulti Teknologi dan Sains Maklumat (FTSM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia were chosen randomly as qualitative comparison's sample, based upon their knowledges in REA modeling. Respondents will be asked to test both system prototypes translated from event approach and agent approach. Results towards mathematical formulas' simulation test shows that the total amount of redundant entity nodes generated by using conventional REA modeling technique always higher than the suggested methodology which proposes agent approach. Besides that, in the aspects of qualitative comparison, results clearly shows that 100% of the sample agreed that the prototype system was which translated from agent approach is able to generate final output faster and more accurate, besides requiring the minimum modeling steps. In addition, agent approach translated system prototype provides the maximum and optimum level of users' comfort; satisfaction and ability to increase REA modeling know ledges for the system's users.

Integrating computer game-based learning into construction education 将电脑游戏学习融入建筑教育

The attention to computer game-based learning has grown as research continues to demonstrate its effectiveness for education. Games have been proven to be an effective tool in supplementing conventional teaching methods. However, prior to the development of such educational game, in order to be effective, it is essential that pedagogic concerns are addressed first and integrated into the game design process. Educational games cannot be designed and developed exclusively by instructional designers, or exclusively by game developers, because the former know little about game development, and the latter know little about the science of teaching and learning. As such, development of educational games requires both the instructional designer and game developer to be equally involved during the design stage. This paper presented a comparative summary of the phases involved in the Instructional Design Process and Tasks, and the Game Design Process and Products. This paper also included a brief overview of the Game Concept and Design Document and discussed how it can be adapted for construction education.

Knowledge audit for References and Customer Services Unit at UNITEN library 为UNITEN图书馆的参考资料和客户服务部进行知识审核

Knowledge management has become a common phrase in many service-oriented or business-oriented and government or privately owned organizations. Consequently, libraries have followed suit in deploying knowledge management for the many benefits being realized by these organizations. In this paper, we consider the appropriateness of a mixed-method approach, which include both quantitative and qualitative techniques of collecting data to reinforce the fact that library reference and customer service trends are changing. The paper proves and acknowledges that knowledge audit is an approach for assessing the viability of knowledge sources for reference librarians in academic institutions. Our subject for this study is the Reference and Customer Services Unit (RSCU) of Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). A knowledge map for the unit is conceived to show the locations of knowledge within the unit.

A novel algorithm based on weakly connected dominating set and learning automata and its application to clustering and routing the sensor networks 基于弱连通支配集和学习自动机的传感器网络聚类和路由算法

A wireless sensor network consisting of a large number of small sensors with low-power transceivers can be an effective tool for gathering data in a variety of environments. Prolonged network lifetime and scalability are important requirements for many sensor network applications. Clustering is an effective topology control approach in wireless sensor networks, which can increase network scalability and lifetime. Clustering sensors into groups so that sensors communicate information only to cluster heads and then the cluster heads communicate the aggregated information to the processing center, may save energy. The weakly connected dominating set (WCDS) is very suitable for cluster formation. Then we find a suitable route for sending packets with a new routing algorithm with the help of the created cluster. In this paper, we propose a distributed, algorithm for WCDS construction in wireless sensor networks based on distributed learning automata. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm several experiments have been conducted.

Genetic algorithm approach for solving radio resource allocation for overlapping MBSFN area 遗传算法求解重叠MBSFN区域无线电资源分配

Multicast Broadcast Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) is a new technique utilized in 3GPP LTE to deliver Multicast Broadcast Multimedia Service (MBMS) to users. In this paper, we proposed a novel method to allocate different radio resources in overlapping MBSFN area by using Genetic Algorithm (GA). The algorithm would be used to optimize the allocation of radio resource unit in the overlapped areas by finding the best solution to allocate different resources to base stations (eNBs) for delivering different services to different areas. The GA is able to limit the number of RRU to three for up to eight overlapping MBSFN areas. Simulation results show that the proposed method could contribute by providing a set of solution to every dynamically changed topology of MBSFN area.

Internet Addiction and dependency: A case study in UNITEN, Malaysia 网络成瘾与依赖:马来西亚unien的个案研究

The Internet has become an inseparable part of our daily lives. However, problematical use of the Internet can lead to various types of mental and physical problems. Internet Addiction (IA) is a disorder which is caused by problematical Internet usage. This study aims to determine the situation of Internet Addiction in UNITEN, Malaysia by looking at the Internet usage patterns. How is the Internet Addiction situation in UNITEN, Malaysia? What are the profiles of the Malaysian Internet Users? The research employed a quantitative approach. Data collection was based on a web-based and paper-based survey of 700 college students in Malaysia. The questionnaire survey was developed based on Dr. K. Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ). The respondents were then categorized into 3 levels of Internet Addiction: mild, moderate and severe Internet Addiction. A comparative analysis was performed on the situation in Malaysia in which data on the pattern and the usage of Internet was already available. The survey which was carried out with 700 respondents, produced a 3 percent spoiled result, and found that 31 percent of the respondents are mild addicts, 63 percent are moderate addicts and only 3 percent of the respondents are severe Internet Addicts. Further details which include the profiles of Malaysian Internet users and the revision over published knowledge based on Malaysia Internet Addiction are provided in detail. Physical and mental problems caused by Internet Addiction consequently make problems for the society. An awareness of the Internet usage pattern and the situation of Internet Addiction help to prevent and control the negative consequences of this modern disorder.

This study aims to determine the situation of Internet Addiction in UNITEN, Malaysia by looking at the Internet usage patterns. How is the Internet Addiction situation in UNITEN, Malaysia? What are the profiles of the Malaysian Internet Users? The research employed a quantitative approach. Data collection was based on a web-based and paper-based survey of 700 college students in Malaysia. The questionnaire survey was developed based on Dr. K. Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ). The respondents were then categorized into 3 levels of Internet Addiction: mild, moderate and severe Internet Addiction. A comparative analysis was performed on the situation in Malaysia in which data on the pattern and the usage of Internet was already available. The survey which was carried out with 700 respondents, produced a 3 percent spoiled result, and found that 31 percent of the respondents are mild addicts, 63 percent are moderate addicts and only 3 percent of the respondents are severe Internet Addicts. Further details which include the profiles of Malaysian Internet users and the revision over published knowledge based on Malaysia Internet Addiction are provided in detail. Physical and mental problems caused by Internet Addiction consequently make problems for the society. A link adaptation scheme for improving voice quality and overall throughput over WLANs 一种链路自适应方案,用于提高无线局域网的语音质量和总体吞吐量

IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) support link adaptation technique (LA) which allows mobile nodes to select a proper transmission rate. Link adaptation algorithms use packet loss rate as an indication of poor channel conditions. However, most of existing link adaptation techniques cannot classify the loss as collision, congestion or channel error loss and they could mistakenly adjust the rate as if the loss was due to error prone channel. In this paper, we present a detailed classification of packet losses and propose our link adaptation scheme for delay-sensitive VoIP applications. Proposed algorithm only uses its local information and can be easily implemented without any changes on the current IEEE 802.11 standard. Simulation results show better perceived voice quality and higher overall throughput than other existing algorithms.

The paper refines and improves an unique approach for estimating the head pose orientation of subjects wearing eyeglasses by using a combination of line detection and classification approaches by extending from previously, limited discrete face pose, into more accurate face poses based the relative pitch and yaw face orientation. The estimation of the face pose orientation could be used in non-verbal communication, in the area of human-computer interface, and in related areas.

E-waste management: Are we ready for it?: A study on the awareness of COIT students toward e-waste management 电子垃圾管理:我们准备好了吗?: COIT学生对电子垃圾管理意识的研究

Electronic waste (e-waste) management is not new in Malaysia. It is always related to the recycle, reuse and reduce of e-waste and these may be the only approaches of managing e-waste today. Basically, there is no perfect solution in e-waste management. Recycle and reuse only temporary transfer the e-waste to other places and after sometimes, the e-waste still landed on the landfill. Reducing the use of toxic materials is a better way of managing e-waste, but for time being, it is difficult and not cost effective to replace and reduce all these materials. This paper carry out a survey onto the students from the College of Information Technology (COIT), UNITEN in order to identify whether the students are aware of the essentiality of e-waste management. Based on the study results, it shows that COIT students are not ready for e-waste management and the factor of not offering of Green IT or e-waste management subject is having the main factors of the unawareness of e-waste management.
