A comparison of three different data-acquisition and analysis methods using image analysis for end-edge detection of IPMC actuator strips is presented in this paper. The type of mechanical movements of IPMC strips are specific and well known. This work is focused on comparing the results of the analysis of experimental measurements realized in underwater conditions when one end-edge is fixed-clapped and the other is free. The tracking techniques of the free edge are based on three different approaches, while the two of them use the new technology of Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) to reduce further the processing time. The results show that the new techniques increased by 47 and 70 times the speed of detection.

The effectiveness of complex Grid systems strongly depends on the availability, accuracy and relevance of information on all connected resources, their characteristics and state. An access to this information plays a very important role in any Grid system, providing necessary information for other Grid components and users. We believe that application of semantic technologies can improve Grid utilization and enhance user interaction with the system. In this paper we present our vision of the semantic Grid resource information service.

In this paper, we analyze performance implications of checkpointing strategies in unreliable computing environments. We show that if the appropriate checkpointing strategy is not chosen, the time to complete a job is heavy-tailed distributed. This can lead to highly-variable and long completion times. We generate asymptotics for job completion times when there is no checkpointing, a fixed number of random checkpoints, and when checkpoints occur at fixed intervals for various task time distributions. Our asymptotic results are derived using large deviation theory.

Recently, the use of various chatterbots has been proposed to simulate conversation with human users. Several chatterbots can talk with users very well without a high-level contextual understanding. However, it may be difficult for chatterbots to reply to specific and interesting sentences because chatterbots lack intelligence. To solve this problem, we have proposed a novel chatterbot that can directly use Web information. In this paper, we propose a novel method of estimating current user interests to make conversation natural.

The speed at which new digital communication systems are being developed is increasing dramatically. Growing quantity of transmitted information and growing quantity of users require development of modern communication systems based on new principles; existing systems are quickly becoming obsolete technologically. Digital radio and television broadcasting (DVB-T, DVB-T2), which break down into three options — satellite, cable and terrestrial systems expanded massively in the Czech Republic in 2010. Multistate digital modulation M-QAM is used for transmission of information in these systems. This article is focused on the analysis of digitally modulated signals in communication systems which use software defined radio concept and modern synthetic instruments. Authors of this article present real results, which illustrate the link between number of symbols in M-state QAM modulation, SNR and BER. Constellation diagrams of transmitted and received symbols (with superposition of noise) were presented in the article. Simple picture is transmitted through simulated radio channel to show the result of signal impairments. Experiments were done using software defined radio concept of communication system. Modular PXI HW platform was used in connection with graphically oriented development environment. This combination of modular HW and flexible SW components allows changing the communication protocol, modulation scheme, frequency bandwidth and other parameters in a very simple way by changing the software part of the system.

Many various algorithms are developed for state estimation of dynamic switching systems. It is not a straightforward task to choose the most suitable one. This paper deals with testing of state estimation via two well-known approaches: recursive estimation with finite mixtures and iterative technique with hidden Markov models. A discussion of comparison of these online and offline counterparts is of true interest. The paper describes experiments providing a comparison of these methods.

Different types of gas sensors are used to implement applications which investigate ambient air pollution levels. Carbon monoxide (CO) concentration measurement is an integral part of dedicated environment monitoring stand-alone specialized systems. This paper presents an alternative solution for CO concentration monitoring, based on an original virtual instrumentation concept. The advantages of the proposed application include data logging, statistical calculations, remote access or software and hardware flexibility. Comparative experimental results are also provided.

The anti-lock braking system is nowadays a part of almost every vehicle. This system increases safety of the people sitting in the vehicle at the moment of stopping on a slippery or unstable road surface. The point is to assure a good controllability of the vehicle even if the wheels are in slip. In order to work properly, the anti-lock braking system needs to have actual information about the rotation of every single wheel. And the up-to-dateness and certainty of an accurate information is the primary criterion of an appropriate performance. Currently, the information about the frequency of wheel rotation is being transmitted via the current loop. This solution needs a lot of wiring, which means increased purchase costs. This paper describes a method, where the information from the rotation sensors of the wheels are transmitted into the control unit through the FlexRay bus. Additional wireless acceleration sensors located on the wheel are used to improve the ABS performance.
