‘The Man Will Shame Me’: Women, Sex and Kirk Discipline during the Cromwellian Occupation 《
Pub Date : 2022-10-01 DOI: 10.3366/sch.2022.0074
Michelle D. Brock
This article explores the experiences of Scottish women and their interactions with the Kirk during the Cromwellian occupation. Drawing on kirk session records, it demonstrates that amid the heightened anxieties of the 1650s, parish kirks viewed and treated female bodies as potential sources of social and religious disorder. This analysis reveals the strength of the Kirk’s regulatory toolkit in times of crisis as well as the continuity of gendered experiences of discipline. It also offers new insights into civilian experiences of the Cromwellian invasion.

Open Fields, Stinking Bodies, and Loud Voices: Britishness and Religious Awakenings in Eighteenth-Century Scotland
Pub Date : 2022-10-01 DOI: 10.3366/sch.2022.0072
Tucker Adkins
This article interprets the Scottish awakenings through spaces, sounds, and bodies. As southwestern Scots filled late-night, open-air services and repeatedly experienced swooning, screaming, and spectral hauntings, they entered the same ‘work’ seen throughout the North Atlantic. But the events at Cambuslang and Kilsyth were not commonplace replicas of the outpourings seen elsewhere. The spatial, sonic, and corporeal contexts underlying Scotland’s revivals show that the awakeners of northern Britain stridently upended the social expectations indispensable to eighteenth-century ‘Britishness’. They specifically did so by seizing and retooling long-held stereotypes regarding Scottish bodies and spaces. In doing so, Scotland’s born-again clergy and laypeople joined their co-laborers in thoroughly democratising Protestantism across the British Atlantic.

Clergy Widows in Early Modern Scotland
Pub Date : 2022-10-01 DOI: 10.3366/sch.2022.0073
Chris R. Langley
This article explores the way that widows of Scottish ministers negotiated the legal structure of the Presbyterian church courts in the seventeenth century. Making extensive use of presbytery records it locates clerical widows in relation to their kin and community networks and explores their ability to assert rights established in civil and ecclesiastical laws. This offers important insights into the experience of women, and particularly the widows of ministers, within the structures of church governance in early modern Scotland.

Religious Conversion in the Sermons of Billy Graham during the All Scotland Crusade of 1955 1955年全苏格兰十字军东征期间葛培理布道中的宗教皈依
Pub Date : 2022-10-01 DOI: 10.3366/sch.2022.0075
K. Jeffrey
Billy Graham was one of the world’s most famous Christian evangelists in the twentieth century. He visited Scotland in 1955 and led a six week Crusade at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. Thousands of people attended these rallies and listened to Graham preach. At the end of the campaign, it was calculated that 26,457 people had responded to the Gospel message proclaimed by Graham. This paper, based upon a critical examination of twenty four sermons delivered by Graham, will discuss how the American evangelist presented Evangelical conversion during this Crusade in Scotland. It will explore how becoming a Christian was proclaimed by Graham to his Scottish audience in 1955.
