In a decentralised supply chain, the presence of initial inventory at the retailer is believed to cause the manufacturer to set a lower wholesale price than otherwise. But is such always the case? The importance of that question also derives from a multi-period setting where the manufacturer chooses a wholesale price in each period based on initial inventory at retailer. As the wholesale price is decreasing in inventory level, goes the argument, the retailer will 'overstock', referred to as holding 'strategic inventory'. We show that the optimal wholesale price may increase in initial inventory. We initially assume fixed retail price, and later consider a model with price-sensitive demand. We then outline other price-sensitive models based on different demand functions.

Nowadays, designing a supply chain considering customers' satisfaction is a practical field in supply chain area. In this paper, a multi-objective location-inventory model in a three-echelon supply chain for a perishable product with a fixed lifetime is extended where manufacturers, distributors and customers are the members of the chain. One of the most important factors for supplying perishable products is the availability time for the customers. So, besides the main objective of each chain including minimisation of transportation, inventory, deterioration and shortage costs, another objective as customers' satisfaction related to delivery times should be considered. Here, the optimal lot-sizes, delivery time between factories and distributors so as to choose and locate the best candidate place, and the optimal flows between layers of supply chain are determined. Also, we analyse the decisions of either sending items directly from factories to customers or sending them to the customers through distributors. Moreover, the mixed integer nonlinear model is solved with GAMS and eventually, several numerical examples are presented. The results show that the proposed model is practical in real world problems.

Economic production quantities address an important problem in operations management. The objective is to determine the quantity that minimises total cost required to manufacture goods and hold inventories when production is performed incrementally during the manufacturing process. The dynamic impact of costs and demand is often neglected though parameters may vary over time. In this context, optimal control theory goes beyond the suggestion of a numerical approach and allows for an analytical interpretation of optimal solutions. This paper presents a deterministic continuous time approach minimising the net present value of production and inventory holding cost with dynamic parameters. Manufacturing cost per item, holding cost, and demand rate vary over time. Applying Pontryagin’s maximum principle, the optimal policy involves intervals of production at the capacity limit with inventory build up, destocking periods, and periods of just-in-time production. A solution algorithm is presented to find the optimal manufacturing quantities and an economic interpretation of an optimal solution is provided.
