Communicating About Water in the Floridan Aquifer Region: Part 3— How the Right Messages and Messengers Can Increase Bipartisan Support for Water Policy

When water policies are introduced, they may not be universally supported. One stakeholder group or political party may be “for” the policy and contend that the public should vote “yes.” They may argue that the policy is fair to the parties involved or that it shows loyalty to affected communities. These are moral arguments used to sway public support. An opposing stakeholder group or political party may also issue moral arguments “against” the policy. They may argue that the public should vote “no” because the policy is not fair or is disloyal to impacted communities. In competitive policy scenarios like these, at least two factors affect public support for the policy – moral arguments and the identities of the communicators. Understanding how each of these factors influences policy preferences is key to creating a communication that is conducive to broad public support.

The hibiscus erineum mite, Aceria hibisci (Nalepa 1906) 芙蓉螨,Aceria hibisci(Nalepa 1906 年)
Pub Date : 2024-02-27 DOI: 10.32473/edis-in1419-2024
M. Weaver, Adam Dale
Aceria hibisci, the hibiscus erineum mite, is a mite in the family Eriophyidae and can be a pest on ornamental Hibiscus rosa-sinensis plants. Eriophyid mites are small worm-like mites that feed on plants by sucking out the cellular contents from leaves and stems. During feeding, they release chemicals that cause the formation of abnormal plant growths like galls and erinea. This mite species is not currently present in the continental U.S., but is established in several Pacific islands including Fiji and Hawaii, as well as Caribbean regions including Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. Therefore, it is a species of concern with potential to become introduced and established in the continental U.S. This publication describes biology, diagnosis, distribution, and management of this mite species.

Ips sexdentatus, also known as the six-toothed spruce bark beetle, is a species that primarily colonizes spruce trees (Pinaceae) across Eurasia. While not yet recorded outside of its native range, it was listed the 2023 Priority Pest List designed by USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and has a high invasion potential to the North American continent.

What if prescribed fire is not an option? A review of alternative treatments.
Pub Date : 2024-02-26 DOI: 10.32473/edis-fr474-2024
Michael G. Andreu, Christopher Kinslow, Stephen Enloe
Fire has been a significant part of southeastern American forests for thousands of years. Prescribed fire is an effective method to achieve some land management goals, but sometimes it is not possible to use this tool. Fortunately, there are alternative treatment options that land managers can consider. Although none of these surrogate treatments will produce the same suite of benefits as prescribed fire, they can mimic some of the benefits that prescribed fire creates and are better than applying no treatments. This publication provides an overview for landowners and land managers that want to understand surrogate treatments and the economic and ecological tradeoffs associated with each treatment.

Vanilla Growing in South Florida
Pub Date : 2024-02-26 DOI: 10.32473/edis-hs1348-2024
Xingbo Wu, Pamela Moon, A. Chambers, Jonathan Crane
Vanilla extract is popular around the world as an ingredient in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical applications. The botanical source of vanilla extract is primarily the cured beans of Vanilla planifolia. The United States is the world's largest importer of vanilla beans, but domestic production is minimal. Southern Florida has a favorable growing environment for vanilla cultivation. Though currently there is no commercial production of vanilla in southern Florida, it has the potential to be a highly profitable crop in the future. This publication aims to provide basic information to growers interested in establishing a vanillery.

Sample Collection for Ganoderma Butt Rot of Palms
Pub Date : 2024-02-21 DOI: 10.32473/edis-pp373-2024
Braham Dhillon, Seemanti Chakrabarti
Palms are an integral part of the urban landscape in Florida. Ganoderma butt rot of palms, a disease caused by the wood-decaying white-rot fungus Ganoderma zonatum, is one of the major biotic concerns for the landscape industry. The lethal disease is prevalent across palm-growing regions in the US, and all palm species are believed to be susceptible to this fungus. It may take six months to a year for the diseased palm to die once the initial symptoms appear. But with the availability of a disease diagnostic assay, this fungal pathogen can be detected using saw dust samples collected from declining palms, several months before symptoms appear. Collect good quality samples by following these steps and understanding the caveats associated with each step.

H-2A Workers in Demand in the Ornamental Horticulture Industry
Pub Date : 2024-02-20 DOI: 10.32473/edis-fe1141-2024
Xuan Wei, Benjamin L. Campbell, H. Khachatryan, R. Brumfield
The US agricultural industry depends on immigrant farm labor, particularly in the specialty crop sector where tasks like harvesting require a lot of labor. Most US farmworkers are from other countries, and almost half are not authorized to work in the United States.  The importance of immigrant labor in meeting the demand for workers in the nursery and floriculture production sector has been further highlighted with this industry's recent growth. This publication offers an overview of the increasing demand for H-2A workers in the ornamental horticulture industry, examines growers' challenges, and explores the underlying factors affecting workers’ participation in the H-2A program. It guides industry stakeholders to monitor changes in immigration policies and labor regulations, including the H-2A program and to adjust labor management practices accordingly. It includes strategies to address  labor challenges and remain competitive in the marketplace
